MSUM Women to Entertain Vikings and Wildcats in NSIC Weekend

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Alex Nemzek Hall this weekend when it hosts No. 18 Augustana at 6 p.m. on Friday and Wayne State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

MSUM (12-8, 9-7 NSIC) is just one game out of first place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division, trailing St. Cloud State and Northern State. The top four teams in the final division standings will host a game in the first round of the NSIC tournament on Feb. 27. The Dragons have played four straight road games, a stretch which was capped off by a split last weekend. Augustana is 16-4 overall and 12-4 in the NSIC, while Wayne State is 13-7 overall and 9-7 in the league.

The Dragons will meet Augustana for an 18th time, with the Vikings holding an all-time 15-2 series lead.  Augustana won all three meetings a year ago by scores of 98-66, 67-57 and 89-77 (NSIC tournament quarterfinal)

MSUM will meet Wayne State for a 32nd time, with the Wildcats holding an 18-13 lead. Wayne State won both meetings a year ago (70-53 and 77-73).

About MSUM
MSUM split on the road last weekend, rolling to a 78-54 rout of Upper Iowa, thanks to 21 points and seven rebounds from junior Megan Strese. A night later at Winona State, the Dragons saw their five-game winning streak end with a 76-54 loss to the Warriors, despite 14 points form Strese.

Strese leads MSUM at 15.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.  Senior Marisa Yernatich averages 12.3 points per game, while junior Morgan Zabel is at 12.0 points per game. Junior Haley Thomforde leads with 63 assists, while senior Kaycee Charette leads with 32 steals. As a team, MSUM shoots 39.2 percent from the field and scores 66.6 points per game; the Dragons outrebound their opponents 40.2-34.7 and allow 64.9 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 13th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 220-145.

About Augustana
The Vikings, who are ranked 18th in the latest Division II coaches poll, are 16-4 overall and 12-4 in the NSIC. They swept a pair of home games last weekend, beating Minnesota-Duluth, 63-43 and St. Cloud State, 60-57.

Four Vikings average in double figures, led by senior Alex Feeney at 14.7 points per game. Shaunteva Ashley averages 11.1 points per game, while Faith Tinklenberg is at 10.5 and Lyda Nelson 10.3. Feeney leads at 7.7 rebounds per game while Ashley leads with 74 assists. As a team, Augustana scores 77.6 points per game and shoots 42.4 percent form the field. The Vikings outrebound their opponents, 46.3-37.8 and allow 58 points per game.

Dave Krauth is in his 24th season as Augustana's head coach with a record of 481-213 at the school.

About Wayne State
The Wildcats are 13-7 overall and 9-7 in the NSIC.  They swept St. Cloud State (69-65) and Minnesota-Duluth (62-47) at home last weekend.

Jordan Spencer leads Wayne State at 15.5 points per game, while Ashton Yossi is at 14.3 points per game. Ellen Hansen averages 10.0 points per game and leads the team at 7.8 rebounds per contest. Wayne State shoots 40.1 percent from the field and scores 63.2 points per game. The Wildcats allow 57.2 points per game and are being out rebounded by their opponents, 39.0-37.8.

Chris Kielsmeier is in his fifth season as Wayne State's head coach with a record of 112-32 at the school.

Preseason Poll
MSUM was picked to finish 11th in the NSIC in a polling of the league's coaches. The Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the NSIC's North Division.

Yernatich Adds to Three-Point Record
Senior Marisa Yernatich has set the standard for three-point shooting during her career for MSUM, and has the record to prove it. Yernatich now has 182 three-pointers for her career and holds the all-time record.  She tied the single-game school record she had set previously with seven 3-pointers in the 71-65 win over Minnesota-Crookston on Jan. 4.
