MOORHEAD, Minn. -- A 22-7 run to end the first half propelled the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team into the lead, and the Dragons pulled away in the second half in a 79-62 win over Augustana in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game on Friday night.
MSUM improved to 16-7 overall and 10-7 in the league, while Augustana, which had won six in a row, fell to 16-5 overall and 12-5 in the NSIC.
The Dragons had four players score nine points or more, led by senior
Anthony Tucker, who had a game-high 22 points to go along with five assists. Senior
Alex Novak had 19 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, while sophomore
Jordan Riewer had 10 points and a game-high six assists. Freshman
Tyler Vaughan had nine points and three assists.
MSUM's perimeter defense was solid as they held the Vikings to just 9.1 percent (2-of-22) from three-point range. MSUM shot 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from three and 53.3 percent (32-of-60) overall for the game.
The big run came after MSUM faced a 24-18 deficit with 9:44 left in the first half. The Dragons then got rolling with the 22-7 spurt. Vaughan had six points during the run while Tucker had five and Novak four. Six different Dragons scored during the stretch. Freshman
Isaac Sevlie had two points and also had a resounding block to end the half as MSUM took a 40-31 lead into halftime.
The Dragons continued their momentum to start the second half, outscoring the Vikings 24-10 over the first 6:36 to build an insurmountable 64-41 lead. Tucker scored 10 points during that run, while Novak had four. Freshman
Brady Wohler capped off the stretch with a three-point play.
MSUM's lead never shrunk below 13 the rest of the way as the Dragons rolled to the 17-point win.
Senior
Eric Olson had six points, a team-high four blocks and four rebounds for MSUM.
MSUM wraps up the home weekend on Saturday against Wayne State.
