VIRGINIA, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University women's tennis team recorded its first win of the 2013 season with a 6-3 victory over Minnesota-Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Virginia, Minn. MSUM fell to St. Cloud State, 8-1 later in the day to finish with a split of the two matches.

MSUM (1-3, 1-2 NSIC) had a solid performance in singles in the win over UMD. MSUM won four of the six singles matches, led by straight-set wins by freshmen Cassie Smith (No. 3 singles, 7-6, 6-2), Morgan Smith (No. 4, 6-1, 6-2) and Ashley Wood (No. 5, 6-4, 6-3). Sophomore Jenna Galstad rallied from a one-set deficit at No. 1 singles to earn a 4-6, 6-1, 10-2 win over UMD's Alyssa Brunelli.

The Dragons also won two of three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Kaitlin McNary and Kaitlyn Emerson won a hard-fought 9-7 decision over the Bulldog tandem of Bailey Kolles and Delaney Dobbs. At No. 3 doubles, Morgan Smith and Cassie Smith teamed up for an 8-2 win.

In the loss to St. Cloud State, the Dragons were swept in all six singles matches. Morgan Smith and Cassie Smith provided MSUM's point with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Dragons are back in action on Feb. 22 against Northern State in Bismarck, N.D.
