SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team stretched its winning streak to four games with 6-3 and 8-1 wins over Minnesota-Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Sunday in Sioux City, Iowa.
Freshmen
Katie Edison and
Morgan Nybo both pitched complete games for MSUM, while sophomore
Moriah Bruns finished the day going 4-for-8 with a double and three RBI. Freshman
Kristy Bruni homered twice for MSUM as well. And in the field, MSUM committed just two errors on the day.
"We played two solid all-around games again," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said. "Katie and Morgan gave us two good performances on the mound and our defense was steady behind them. And our bats came up with the big hits when we needed them. Hopefully our young team can build off this weekend and finish the season strong."
In the opening game, Bruni was 2-for-3 with a homer and an RBI. Sophomore
Brittany York was 2-for-4, while Bruns was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore
Taylor Huss was 1-for-3 with a run scored while sophomore
Amanda Lynch was 1-for-3 as well.
Edison picked up the first win of her collegiate career with a complete game. She gave up three runs (all earned), allowing seven hits and two walks. She struck out three.
Bruni's solo homer in the fifth got MSUM on the board, but the Dragons needed a big five-run rally in the top of the seventh to erase a 3-1 deficit. With one out, Huss singled up the middle, and Bruni followed with a single through the left side. Huss moved to third on an error.
Kristen Nordby's fielder's choice scored Huss, bringing the Dragons within 3-2.
After a
Rachel Sannicandro fielder's choice forced out Bruni at third, Bruns came up big with two outs, doubling to center field to score Nordby with the tying run.
MSUM was not through. Sophomore
Mollie Annen reached on an error, allowing both Bruns and Sannicandro to score a pair of unearned runs. Annen later scored on a wild pitch to push the Dragon lead to 6-3.
That was plenty for Edison, who retired UMC in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Bruns had a huge game in the second contest, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Nordby was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while senior
Amanda Moore was 2-for-3 with an RBI. York was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Bruni and Huss both hit solo homers. Annen added a triple, while Sannicandro had a hit and scored two runs. MSUM outhit the Golden Eagles, 12-4.
Freshman
Morgan Nybo picked up the win for MSUM, going the distance. She allowed one earned run and four hits, walking four while striking out three.
MSUM trailed 1-0 after the first inning but stormed back with a five-run second inning. Huss and Bruni hit back-to-back solo homers to lead off the inning to give MSUM a 2-0 lead. Nordby followed with a single, and Sannicandro reached on an error.
Bruns singled through the right side and moved to second on the throw, with Nordby scoring the Dragons' third run of the inning.
Annen's RBI groundout scored Sannicandro, and York singled to center to score Bruns as the Dragons built a 5-0 advantage.
MSUM added three more runs in the fourth. Nordby doubled down the left field line, and moved to third on an infield single by Sannicandro. Bruns singled to center to score Nordby to make it 6-0. One out later, York's sacrifice fly scored Sannicandro, and Moore delivered an RBI single to right to score Bruns with MSUM's eighth and final run of the game.
MSUM's doubleheader with Valley City State, which was scheduled for Tuesday, has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. The Dragons are scheduled to face Minnesota-Duluth on Wednesday, with the site and time to be determined. Check msumdragons.com for updates.
