MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team will look to end its 2013 season on a winning note on Friday when it faces Minnesota-Crookston at 6:30 p.m. in Grand Forks, N.D.
The top eight teams qualifying for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament. MSUM (2-10, 2-9 NSIC) has been mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the tournament; the young Dragons -- who do not have a senior on their roster -- do have a chance to climb a spot the standings with a win on Friday however, and finish in ninth. MSUM trails Minnesota-Duluth, which has three NSIC matches left on the schedule, by one match in the standings.
MSUM is coming off of a pair of losses to two of the top teams in the NSIC, losing to league champion Augustana (9-0) and Winona State (9-0) in matches held at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
Freshman
Morgan Smith leads the Dragons with a 6-6 mark in singles play; she is 6-5 in NSIC matches in singles. Freshman
Ashley Wood has three singles wins for MSUM.
In doubles,
Morgan Smith and
Cassie Smith have teamed up for a 5-5 mark.
Oliver Summers is in his first year as MSUM's head coach.
Minnesota-Crookston is 1-11 overall and 0-9 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles are led in singles by freshman Catherine Brown, who is 5-7 at the No. 3 slot. Katelyn Johnson is 4-8 at No. 2 singles for UMC.
Holly Roepke and Amana Pihaja have teamed up for a 4-8 mark in doubles for the Golden Eagles, who are coach by Josh Lunek.
