MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team opens the 2013 regular season with a pair of nonconference matches this week. The Dragons open the season Thursday at the University of Jamestown and make their home debut Sunday against Missouri Western.
The Dragons, entering their 15th season under the direction of Head Coach Rollie Bulock, return 13 letterwinners from last year's team that went 4-12-2 overall and 3-10-2 in the NSIC.
MSUM will face Jamestown for a 14th time; the Dragons hold a 10-3 edge in the all-time series. The Dragons will face Missouri Western for the first time in school history.
The team's top returning offensive player is junior Erin Nyberg, who was named to the All-NSIC third team a year ago. She led the team in goals (seven), points (16) and tied for the team lead in assists with two. Also returning is Sienna Rebollozo, who had a goal and an assist a year ago.
All three goalkeepers return for the Dragons, including seniors Carole Braschayko and Victoria Hoffman, who shared the team lead with 47 saves a year ago. Sophomore Ashley Leintz, who led the team in wins and shutouts a year ago, also returns.
Bullock has a 91-153-14 record at MSUM and is 105-176-16 overall as a college head coach.
About Jamestown
The Jimmies finished 8-9-2 a year ago under first-year coach Nick Becker. They are off to an 0-4 start this season. Like MSUM, the team returns two seniors.
Jolynn Warnes, a junior, is the Jimmies' top returner; she had six goals and five assists a year ago. Senior Gabrielle Lane also returns after recording five assists a year ago.
Jamestown, which will compete in the NorthStar Athletic Association, is 8-13-2 during Becker's tenure as head coach.
About Missouri Western
The Griffons return 15 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's team that finished 6-9-1 overall and 4-7-1 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Griffons were picked to finish ninth in the MIAA according to the preseason coaches poll.
The team's top returner is junior Katie Kempf, who had four goals and two assists last season and shared the team lead with 10 points. KC Ramsell also returns after recording four assists last year. Missouri Western lost its starting goalkeeper, Kelly Voigts, from a year ago.
Missouri Western will face Bemidji State on Friday prior to facing MSUM.
Chad Edwards is in his third season as Missouri Western's head coach with a record of 10-19-1.
