DULUTH, Minn. – A 12-3 run over the final three minute helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team earn a 76-71 win over Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday in Duluth, Minn.
MSUM improved to 13-4 overall and 9-4 in the NSIC with its second straight win, while Minnesota Duluth dropped to 7-10 overall and 5-8 in the NSIC.
Freshman forward
Aaron Lien tied a career-high with 18 points. Junior guard
Jordan Riewer added 14 points and three assists, while junior forward
Urbane Bingham added 14 points. Senior guard
Tarell Clark had eight rebounds, three steals and three assists.
MSUM shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) compared to 48.9 percent for the Bulldogs (23-of-47). UMD held a 34-32 edge in rebounds.
The game's biggest lead was six points, and there were 15 ties and 11 lead changes.
The Bulldogs took a 68-62 lead with 3:17 left after Jordan Reetz converted a three-point play. After a pair of Riewer free throws, Lien converted a crucial three-point play to put MSUM within 68-67.
Duluth scored again to push the lead to 70-67, but a jumper by Lien again brought the Dragons within one point at 70-69. After a crucial Bulldog turnover, Riewer drained a three-pointer to put MSUM up 72-70 – a lead the Dragons would not relinquish.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to one with a free throw, but the Dragons answered with a layup by sophomore
Tyler Vaughan to stretch their lead to 74-71 with 20 seconds left. Reetz, who had a game-high 28 points, missed a three-pointer, and Riewer got the rebound and made two free throws to ice the win for MSUM.
The first half was close the whole way, with the biggest lead for either team being four points. Lien drained a three-pointer to put MSUM up 21-17 with 11:35 left in the first half, but the Dragon lead never grew beyond that. The Dragons led 37-33 with 1:39 left in the half but the Bulldogs scored the final four points of the half to tie things up at 37-37 at the break.
MSUM shot 42.9 percent (12-of-28) in the first half, compared to 50 percent (11-of-22) for the Bulldogs. Lien led the Dragons with eight first-half points while Riewer had seven and Bingham six. Reetz led UMD with 16 first-half points.
The game continued to be tight throughout the second half, although UMD led by six on a pair of occasions, including the 68-62 deficit the Dragons rallied from in the closing minutes.
Junior guard
Malik Wood added six points and two assists off the bench for MSUM. Vaughan had eight points.
The Dragons are at St. Cloud State on Saturday for a 6 p.m. game.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight marked the second time that the Dragons beat the Bulldogs in Duluth since UMD rejoined the NSIC. Their only other victory in this six-game stretch was an 85-73 victory on Feb. 10, 2012.
