SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Junior guard
Prescott Williams led with 12 points, but the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team fell short against the University of Sioux Falls, dropping a 92-70 decision to the Cougars in action Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
MSUM fell to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in the NSIC with the loss, while Sioux Falls improved to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Williams was 4-of-8 from the field and added four rebounds. Junior guard
Jordan Riewer added 11 points, while senior guard
Tarell Clark added 10 points, a team-high nine rebounds and a team-high four assists. Junior forward
Urbane Bingham added nine points and seven rebounds in his first start of the season.
The Dragons shot just 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field, compared to 50.9 percent (29-of-57) for the Cougars, who had five players in double figures. USF had a slight 39-35 edge in rebounds.
MSUM got off to a good start, opening on a 7-2 run over the first 4:15. Freshman
Matt Nelson hit a three during that run for the Dragons.
However, USF closed the gap and the game was close for much of the first half. MSUM held a 30-26 lead after a Riewer basket with 4:39 left in the half, but the Cougars ended the half on a 19-5 run to take a 45-35 lead into halftime.
Bingham and Riewer had seven points each in the first half for MSUM while Nelson had six. The Dragons shot just 34.3 percent (12-of-35) in the first half.
The Dragons opened the second half strong on a 10-2 run to cut the Cougar lead to 47-45 with 16:13 left. Williams had four points during that stretch for MSUM while Clark had three.
The Cougars scored 12 of the next 14 points, however to push the lead to 59-47, and the Dragons never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Sophomore guard
Ngijol Songolo added eight points off the bench for MSUM.
MSUM is back in action on Saturday at Southwest Minnesota State. Game time is 7 p.m. in Marshall, Minn.
