MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team lost in three sets to the University of Sioux Falls volleyball team on Saturday evening. The Cougars swept three sets away from the Dragons, 25-20, 25-20, 25-17.
With the loss, the Dragons fall to 7-11 on the season and 2-8 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. Sioux Falls improves to 11-9 and 5-5 in NSIC play.
Kate Hart led all players in the match with 14 kills, hitting .500 on 26 attack attempts. Kayla Crane dished out 34 assists in the win. Junior
Kaitlin VanWinkle led the way for the Dragons with 10 kills. Senior
Sam Sullivan had 14 assists while
Katie Meyers led the way with seven digs. Four Dragons had two blocks in the match; VanWinkle,
Abby Wolpern,
Kelsey Hartkopf, and
Maggie Gruber.
Sioux Falls set the tone in the first set scoring the first five points, partly thanks to two kills by Hart. The Dragons fought back and took the lead at 14-13 after a service ace from VanWinkle. After that point, the Cougars scored five straight points to take a 18-14 lead. Sioux Falls took scored the last point 25-20 on a kill from Jordan Calef.
The second set was back-and-forth, with the score being tied as late as 18-18 after a Cougar kill from Emily Johnson. After the tied score, the Cougars went on a four consecutive point streak and ended up taking the set 25-20 on an attack error from MSUM.
Sioux Falls scored the first four points in the third set and increased its lead to 23-13 in the set. A Cougar kill from Michelle Ritland gave Sioux Falls the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
MSUM will travels to Bismarck, N.D. on Tuesday, October 14 to face the University of Mary. The first set is slated for 7 p.m.
