Dragon Volleyball Sweeps Mary in Three Sets

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University volleyball team swept the University of Mary volleyball team in three sets on Tuesday night, 25-21, 25-20, and 25-17.

With the win, the Dragons increase their record to 8-11 on the season and 3-8 in the NSIC. Mary fell to 3-17 overall and 0-11 in the league.

MSUM senior Maggie Gruber led all players in kills with 11. Junior Casie Baer had 18 assists while senior Sam Sullivan led the team in digs with 10. Junior Kailtin VanWinkle led the team with five total blocks while also contributing 10 kills.

The Dragons fell behind in the first set after Mary scored the first four points of the match. The Dragons fought back however, scoring its first two points off blocks from VanWinkle and sophomore Claire Grimm. Gruber put away three kills early in the set and MSUM tied the score at 13. The Dragons scored four consecutive points after the tie and took the set 25-20 after a block from sophomore Kelsey Hartkopf and junior Abby Wolpern.

The Marauders jumped out to an early lead again in the second set at 4-1. A Gruber kill after a long rally gave the Dragons the momentum to rally off four points in a row to make the score 8-6 Dragons. MSUM went on another stretch of seven straight points in the set to lead 19-10 with two kills from VanWinkle and Grimm each in the run. A sneaky attack kill from Baer when it appeared she would give a set stopped a Mary attempted comeback and made the score 21-15. Gruber put away the final point of the set from a Sullivan set, giving the Dragons the set 25-20.

The third set started out back and forth with Mary leading until a solo block from Hartkopf tied the score at 9. MSUM rattled off four consecutive points and took a 12-9 lead. VanWinkle increased the Dragons lead with an ace serve to make it 18-12. VanWinkle put away the final kill to give the set 25-17 to the Dragons and the match 3-0.
