MSUM Volleyball Falls to No. 16 Augustana in Three Sets

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- In its second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road trip of the season, the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team lost in three straight sets to No. 16 Augustana, 25-11, 26-24, and 25-20 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Dragons move to 7-8 on the season and 2-5 in NSIC play.

Courtney Ysker had 19 kills to lead the Vikings. Marissa Johnson contributed 27 assists for Augustana. Junior Kaitlin VanWinkle led the Dragons in kills with 14 a hit a season high .619 in 21 attack attempts. Junior Casie Baer led the Dragons with 17 assists and added seven digs. VanWinkle and freshman Sydney Foss led MSUM in digs with eight each. Three Dragons had two total blocks to lead the team (VanWinkle, Foss, and sophomore Kelsey Hartkopf).

MSUM scored the first two points of the first set, but Augie took control of the set after a kill from Ysker made the score 7-6. The Vikings pulled away after that point and took the set 25-11. Ysker had five kills and Tahylr Banks added four digs.

The second set was much more competitive, with four lead changes and nine ties occurring in the set. The Dragons led by four twice in the set, including once at 14-10 after VanWinkle buried a kill from a Baer set. Augie fought back to take the set 26-24 heading into the break as Ysker proved to be too much, putting away eight kills in the set.

In the third set, the Vikings jumped out to a 7-3 lead early after a Dragon attack error. The Dragons shrunk the lead to one point at 18-17, but that was the closest they would come. The final point of the match came on a set from Johnson and a kill from Kelsey Kaufmann and the Vikings took the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

The Dragons will play on the road again tomorrow in Wayne, Neb against Wayne State. The first serve is slated for 4 p.m.
