MOORHEAD, Minn.—The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team led 13-10 after seven matches, but Concordia won the final three on its way to a 22-13 dual meet win over the Dragons in nonconference action Wednesday at Memorial Auditorium on the Concordia campus.
MSUM fell to 0-1 in duals while Concordia, which is ranked No. 6 in Division III, improved to 1-0.
The Dragons won four of the 10 matches on the night. Two of their losses came by one point while another came in overtime.
"I thought the team wrestled hard," MSUM head coach
Kris Nelson said. "It was an exciting dual; it just didn't end up going our way."
Sophomore
Shane Novak, who moved down from 133 pounds a year ago, opened the match with an 11-5 win over Concordia's Nate Humann at 125.
"I thought Shane looked good," Nelson said. "He controlled the match and really controlled the third period in particular. He got the ball rolling for us."
Sophomore
Blake Bosch, who moved up to 133 pounds after wrestling at 125 last season, was strong in his match, earning an 11-1 win by major decision over Concordia's Will McCarthy.
At 141, Jacoby Bergeron, a Division III All-American last season, battled MSUM's
Philippe Walker in a very closely-contested match. Bergeron edged Walker 6-5 to cut the Dragon lead to 7-3.
"We knew it was going to be a close match," Nelson said. "It was a match I felt could have gone either way."
Sophomore
Isaac Novacek also lost a tough one-point match, dropping a 9-8 decision to Chase Austvold at 149 pounds as the Cobbers climbed within 7-6 in the dual. Sophomore
Garret Hoffner got MSUM back in the win column with a 5-3 win over Ben Cousins of Concordia at 157 to push the Dragon lead to 10-6.
"Garret wrestled a controlled match; he wrestled solid," Nelson said.
Concordia won at 165 as Jake Krogstad, the No. 3-ranked wrestler in Division III, topped
Dan Murakami, 14-2 in a major decision to tie the match at 10-10.
Senior
Shawn Porter helped the Dragons regain the lead at 174 as he topped Dan Marquette, 11-7. With that win, MSUM led 13-10.
The Cobbers however won the final three matches. At 184, Sebastian Gardner topped MSUM senior
Michael Joseph, 4-0, and at 197, Brandon Larson pinned MSUM junior
Chris Bascon in 1:43 to give Concordia a 19-13 lead.
At 285, the match was tied at 1-1 and went into overtime, where Justice Davis topped Dragon sophomore
Nader Abdullatif, 6-1, to give the Cobbers a 22-13 win.
MSUM will compete at the Finn Grinaker Open hosted by Concordia on Nov. 22.
