Weiler and Hedstrom Lead Dragon Swimmers and Divers Past CSB

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Juniors Lydia Weiler and Jana Hedstrom were each multiple winners to help the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's swimming and diving team earn a 200.5-98.5 win over the College of St. Benedict in a dual meet held Friday at the Nemzek Pool in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM, which is tied for 23rd in the latest CSCAA national rankings, is now 3-1 in duals this season.

Weiler's outstanding junior season continued on Friday. She won the 200 breaststroke with a lifetime-best time of 2:27.71 and was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.99, also a lifetime-best. Weiler neared a lifetime-best in winning the 200 IM in 2:16.76, edging teammate Annika Bordak by .13 seconds.

Hedstrom won the 1-meter diving with a lifetime-best of 238.65 and added a win in the 3-meter diving with a score of 215.80. Sophomore Johanna Weber was second in the 3-meter diving with a score of 195.40.

Junior Jackie Woods won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.30, which was a season-best, and placed second in the 200 breaststroke at 2:27.88, just .17 seconds behind Weiler.

Bordak won the 200 free in 2:01.02, edging CSB's Steph Bierman by .28 seconds, in addition to her runner-up finish in the 200 IM.

Freshman Erin Sullivan won the 100 back with a 59.99, the second straight week she has broken the 1:00 mark in that event. She also swam a lifetime-best of 2:12.55 to win the 200 backstroke, with sophomore Madison Kuznia taking second at 2:14.43.

MSUM's 400 medley relay won with a time of 4:05.58. That consisted of Bordak, Woods, sophomore Ashley Higgins and Sullivan. The Dragons also claimed the 400 free relay win in 3:46.67 with Higgins, junior Kaitlyn McKinney, sophomore Kelly Engbring and sophomore Amber Helgoe teaming up for that victory.

Engbring and Helgoe each had a pair of runner-up finishes on the night. Engbring was second in the 1,000 free (11:23.31) and the 500 free (5:33.60).  Helgoe was second in the 50 free at 25.52 and the 100 freestyle (56.25).

McKinney was second in the 200 fly at 2:25.33 while Marisa Yasuda was second in the 100 butterfly at 1:02.26. Sophomore Danae Scheef (11:34.16) and freshman Molly O'Brien (11:43.65) had a lifetime bests in the 1,000 free.

MSUM is off until Nov. 22 when it hosts Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The dual begins at 10 a.m. in Moorhead.
