MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team defeated Concordia College for the 100
th time on Tuesday night by the score of 87-59. Five Dragons scored in double digits, led by junior forward
Isaac Sevlie, who posted 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Dragons are now 7-0 on the season heading into their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game on Saturday against Northern State.
The key to MSUM's early success has been shooting the basketball better than its opponent, and the Dragons did so again on Tuesday night. MSUM shot 52.5 percent (32-61) from the field and 42.3 percent (11-26) from the three-point line compared to 37.1 percent (23-62) and 35.3 percent (6-17) for the Cobbers.
Junior Isaac SevlieSevlie paced the Dragons in scoring and rebounding with 15 and seven, while senior guard
Jordan Riewer and freshman guard
Tanner Kretchman led the team in assists with four. Riewer also added six rebounds and seven points. Sophomore guard
Aaron Lien added 14 points and five rebounds while junior guard
Ngijol Songolo hit four three-pointers to finish with 12 points. Junior guard
Tyler Vaughan and senior forward
Urbane Bingham were the other Dragons to score in double digits, each posting 10 points.
The Dragons went on an 11-4 run early in the first half to jump out to a 21-11 lead after Vaughan hit a three-pointer at the 13:05 mark. Songolo came off the bench and hit his second three-pointer of the night to increase MSUM's lead to 13 points at 30-17 with 10:16 left in the half. The Dragons scored seven points off turnovers and had 13 points from the bench when they took a 43-31 into the locker room at halftime.
The Cobbers cut the lead to 12 twice early in the second half, but MSUM pushed its lead up to 24 points at 72-48 after a 17-4 run at the 7:56 mark. Bingham had six points in the run. Kretchman came off the bench late in the half and hit two three-pointers to give MSUM a 30 point lead with 43 seconds left before a Cobber three-pointer made the final score 87-59.
MSUM will look to continue its perfect start in its first conference game of the season on Saturday night in Aberdeen, S.D. against Northern State. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: The Dragons have now beaten the Cobbers four times in a row and 13 of their last 15 meetings. The only two losses during this run dating back to November of 1999, were a 54-53 loss at home on Nov. 24, 2009 and an 83-78 setback at Concordia on Nov. 23, 2010.
