MOORHEAD, Minn.-- Friday night was senior night for the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team. The Dragons honored three seniors:
Sam Sullivan,
Maggie Gruber, and
Morgan Gradishar. Sullivan, from Woodbury, Minn., enjoyed four years at MSUM as a setter and has amassed 1,280 assists in her career. Gruber, from Belle Plaine, Minn., is currently tenth in Dragon history in block assists with 253. Gradishar, from Aurora, Colo., totaled 568 kills in her career as a Dragon.
MSUM hosted the No. 3 team in the nation, Concordia St. Paul and lost in four sets, 25-19, 25-17, 22-25, and 25-15. With the loss, the Dragons fell to 10-17 and 5-14 in the NSIC.
Junior
Kaitlin VanWinkle had 14 kills in the match to lead the Dragons, with Sullivan adding 17 assists. On the defensive side, freshman
Sydney Foss had 11 digs and sophomore
Kelsey Hartkopf had four total blocks. Anna Schlaak led the way for the Golden Bears with 20 kills while hitting .457 on 35 attack attempts.
In the first set, the Dragons scored the first two points before the Golden Bears came roaring back with three points of their own. The Dragons led at 12-10 in the set after two CSP attack errors, but the Golden Bears used two stretches of three and five straight points to open a 23-17 lead. The Golden Bears took the set 25-19 after Dragon attack error.
The Golden Bears took a 6-3 lead in the second set after a kill from Mariya Sampson and increased to 20-12 after a kill from Riley Hanson. The set went to the Golden Bears at 25-17 after a kill from Emma Lange.
MSUM jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the third set after a service ace from junior
Abby Wolpern. The Dragons killed an attempted comeback in the set from CSP when a Wolpern kill made the score 18-14. MSUM took the set 25-22 after a bad set from the Golden Bears.
In the fourth set, CSP scored the first five of six points to take a 5-1 lead. The lead increased to 10 at 19-9 after a Dragon attack error and the set was finished at 25-15 on a Golden Bear kill from Heather Schiller.
The Dragons will finish their season on Saturday afternoon against Minnesota State Mankato. First serve is slated for 4 p.m. from Nemzek Fieldhouse.
