MOORHEAD, Minn.--Sunday afternoon was the final nonconference game for the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team. The Dragons finished the nonconference slate with an 88-71 win over Jamestown.
With the win, MSUM improves to 14-1 on the season.
The Dragons shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the field and 39.4 percent (13-33) from the three-point line while holding Jamestown to 36.9 percent (24-65) from the field and 30.8 percent (8-26) from beyond the arc. MSUM dished out 17 assists in the game and only committed six turnovers.
Jordan Riewer Five Dragons scored in double digits for the Dragons, led by senior guard
Jordan Riewer who scored 20. Riewer's 20 is the sixth time this season he has scored at least 20 points and the second straight game. Riewer also led the team with seven assists. Sophomore guard
Aaron Lien led the team with six rebounds while contributing 11 points. Junior guard
Tyler Vaughan had 13 points, junior guard
Ngijol Songolo added 12 points, and freshman guard
Tanner Kretchman had 10 points.
Jamestown led 8-7 five minutes into the first half before MSUM responded with a 12-0 run to grab an 11 point lead at 19-8 with 11:30 left in the half. The run started with a three-pointer from Lien, followed by four consecutive made free throws from senior forward
Urbane Bingham, then a layup by Vaughan, and a three-pointer from Songolo. A layup from Kretchman with two seconds left in the half put the score at 44-27 heading into the break.
The largest lead of the day was 21 for MSUM, occurring in the second half after a three-pointer from Riewer to put the Dragons up 54-33 at the 15:45 mark. The Jimmies cut the lead to 10 at 65-55 after a 7-0 run with eight minutes, 40 seconds left in the game, but the Dragons built its lead back to 20 at 82-62 after two free throws from Riewer at the 3:38 mark. Evan Holt and a jumper from Jamestown rounded out the scoring at 88-71.
Sunday was the final game in the 2014 calendar year for the Dragons. Next game for MSUM will be Jan. 2, 2015 when the Dragons host Upper Iowa. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. following the completion of the women's game from Nemzek Fieldhouse.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: The Dragons have now won 24 consecutive regular season non-conference game dating back to the 83-78 loss suffered at Concordia College on Nov. 23, 2010, and 17 straight home non-conference games since the Cobbers shaded the Dragons 54-53 at Nemzek on Nov. 24, 2009. This win is also the Dragon's tenth straight home non-conference win in the month of December. The last time the Dragons dropped a home non-conference affair in December was when Minnesota State Mankato tripped the Dragons 67-53 on Dec. 18, 2005
