Dragon Men to Face Augustana and Wayne State in Key Road Contests

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team returns to the road this week for a pair of crucial Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games. The Dragons will face Augustana at 8 p.m. Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D., and conclude the weekend at Wayne State at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Wayne, Neb.

MSUM is 16-6 overall and 12-6 in the NSIC. The Dragons are tied for second in the NSIC North Division with St. Cloud State, just two games behind Bemidji State. MSUM owns the seeding tiebreaker with St. Cloud State as a result of sweeping the Huskies this season.

MSUM will face Augustana for a 17th time with the Dragons holding a 9-7 series lead. The Dragons will meet Wayne State for a 26th time with the Wildcats holding a 21-4 series lead.

About MSUM
The Dragons split at home last weekend, beating St. Cloud State, 91-88 on Friday as senior guard Tarell Clark had 27 points. A night later, the Dragons fell short against Minnesota Duluth, falling 70-67.

Clark leads MSUM in scoring (11.7 points per game), rebounding (8.3), total steals (29) and is shooting 54.8 percent from the field. Junior forward Urbane Bingham is at 11.6 points per game while junior Jordan Riewer is at 11.1 points per game. Sophomore guard Tyler Vaughan is at 10.3 points per contest for MSUM. Riewer leads at 3.6 assists per game.

As a team, MSUM scores 85.5 points per game and is shooting 48.1 percent from the field. The Dragons are shooting 38.7 percent from three-point range. The Dragons outrebound their opposition, 39.3-31.8. MSUM allows 73.7 points per game and teams shoot 45.2 percent against the Dragons.

Chad Walthall is in his fourth season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 71-39.

About Augustana
Augustana is 13-11 overall and 10-8 in the NSIC. The Vikings dropped a pair of home games last weekend, losing to Winona State, 78-62 on Friday and Upper Iowa, 84-79 on Saturday.

Sophomore Casey Schilling leads Augustana at 19.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore Daniel Jansen averages 16.1 points per game. Adam Beyer is at 3.1 assists per game. Schilling also leads with 46 steals and 32 blocks.

The Vikings score 78.7 points per game and are shooting 45.8 percent from the field. They outrebound their foes 35.9-32.6 and allow 71.0 points per game. Teams are shooting 45.4 percent against Augustana this season.

Tom Billeter is in his 11th season as Augustana's head coach with a record of 179-136 at the school.

About Wayne State
The Wildcats are 8-14 overall and 5-13 in the NSIC. The Wildcats, who face Northern State prior to facing MSUM, have lost seven in a row, including home losses to Upper Iowa (73-53) and Winona State (79-67) last weekend.

Adol Aluong leads Wayne State at 11.9 points per game while Ty Bauschek averages 11.3 and Ryan Rolfzen 10.5. Jared Bartling averages 4.6 rebounds per game with Bauschek leading at 2.3 assists per game.

As a team, Wayne State scores 65.5 points per game and shoots 43.1 percent from the field. The Wildcats are being outrebounded, 35.8-31.5 and allow 72.3 points per game. Teams shoot 44.7 percent against Wayne State.

Brian Dolan, the former Upper Iowa head coach, is 8-14 in his first year at Wayne State.

Cleaning the Glass
MSUM leads the NSIC in offensive rebounds per game at 13.82. Clark leads the way in that category at 3.36 per game, which is ranked 35th in the nation.

Riewer Ranked at the Line
Junior Jordan Riewer is second in all of Division II in free-throw percentage at 94.3 percent, just .1 percent behind leader Jake Schalow from Bemidji State.

MSUM ranks in the top 30 in the nation (out of 290 teams in Division II) in three areas:
--rebounding margin, 17th (+7.5)
--scoring offense, 25th (85.5)
--scoring margin, 27th (+11.8)

Tarell's Time
Senior Tarell Clark is having a solid all-round season for MSUM. He leads MSUM in scoring (11.7), rebounding (8.3 per game) and steals (29). Clark is shooting 54.8 percent from the field, best of any player in the Dragon rotation, and also has an impressive 74 offensive rebounds. Clark scored a career-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting in MSUM's 87-63 win over Minnesota Crookston on Jan. 18. Twice this season, he has pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds; the latest was last Saturday against Minnesota Duluth.

The Jan. 10 game at Southwest Minnesota State was the 100th at MSUM for head coach Chad Walthall.
