Clark and Sevlie Spark MSUM Men Past Wildcats, 95-84

WAYNE, Neb. – Senior Tarell Clark had 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team to a 95-84 win over Wayne State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday night in Wayne, Neb.

MSUM improved to 17-7 overall and 13-7 in the league with the win while Wayne State fell to 8-16 overall and 5-15 in the NSIC. The Dragons remain tied with St. Cloud State for second place in the NSIC, two games behind Bemidji State. MSUM will hold the seeding tiebreaker in the final standings as a result of sweeping the Huskies this season.

Clark finished 5-of-11 from the field but also hit 17-of-20 foul shots in the game. Sophomore center Isaac Sevlie had a career-high 17 points, while sophomore guard Tyler Vaughan had 12 points and a team-high five assists.

MSUM shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) compared to 38.9 percent (28-of-72) for Wayne State. MSUM had a 48-35 edge on the glass.

The Dragons opened the game on a 9-0 run before Wayne State – which never led in the game -- battled back to tie the game at 9-9.  The Dragons quickly answered with seven straight points of their own, keyed by a three from freshman Aaron Lien., to take the lead at 16-9, and MSUM never relinquished the lead again.

Wayne State did cut the lead to 22-21, but MSUM responded with a 16-4 run to push the lead to 38-25 with 2:56 left in the half. Vaughan led the way with five points during the run while Clark had four.

MSUM led 42-33 at halftime. Clark had 12 first-half points for the Dragons while Vaughan had 10. MSUM shot 42.4 percent (14-of-33), compared to 28.6 percent (10-of-35) for Wayne State.

The Dragons steadily pulled away in the second half, building the lead to 71-54 with 11:05 left. Wayne State got as close as nine but MSUM quickly pushed the lead back to double digits to secure the win. Sevlie had 15 points in the second half alone.

The big advantage for the Dragons came at the foul line, where MSUM hit 38-of-49 attempts, compared to 19-of-24 for Wayne State.

Junior guards Prescott Williams and Malik Wood each contributed eight points for MSUM.

The Dragons conclude the regular season at home with a pair of games next weekend, starting Friday night against Minot State. Game time is 8 p.m. at Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Senior Taylor Filipek started his first game this season, and his first since last year on Jan. 12 at Mankato. Counting tonight's win, the Dragons are now 14-2 when Filipek starts.
