MSUM Women's Tennis Falls to Marauders, 8-1

FARGO, N.D. – Despite a win from sophomore Ashley Wood at No. 6 singles, the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team came up short against Mary on Saturday, dropping an 8-1 decision at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.

MSUM fell to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the loss, while Mary improved to 4-1 overall and 4-1 in the NSIC.

Wood improved her singles record to 3-1 on the young season with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mary's Kate O'Connell at No. 6 singles to account for the Dragons' team point of the night.

The Dragons lost two three-set matches in singles. Senior Cortnei Chance suffered a tough 6-7, 6-3, 10-5 loss to Mary's Catherine Gibbens at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Cassie Smith lost to Mary's Anastasia Bruss, 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 at No. 5 singles.

MSUM also lost a tough No. 2 doubles match, as Chance and Smith fell to Mary's O'Connell and Hallie Welk, 9-8 (10-4 tiebreaker).

Next action for the Dragons is at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning against Upper Iowa. The match will be held at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
