Jessamy Jones and sophomore
Morgan Smith both won singles matches, but the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team fell short in its season opener on Friday, losing to the College of St. Benedict 7-2 in a nonconference dual in Fargo, N.D.
The Dragons fell to 0-1 with the loss while St. Ben's improved to 1-0.
Jones, making her Dragon debut, earned a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles, outlasting Daley Rupar, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 (super tiebreaker third set).
Smith also won a three-set affair, topping Victoria Beach, 7-5, 0-6, 10-7 (super tiebreaker third set) at No. 4 singles.
MSUM lost a pair of competitive matches at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Senior
Cortnei Chance fell to CSB's Laura Finn, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles while sophomore
Cassie Smith fell to CSB's Ellie Black, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5.
The Blazers won all three doubles matches on their way to the win.
MSUM faces Minnesota Duluth at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
