Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman
Kristina Villalobos hit an RBI double in the sixth to drive in what proved to be the winning run as the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team edged Mercy College, 5-4, in nonconference action Saturday in Clermont, Fla.
MSUM's second game of the day against the New York Institute of Technology was suspended in the seventh inning because of the field curfew. The Dragons hold a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh and NYIT has a runner on first with nobody out. The game will be resumed on Monday prior to the regularly-scheduled game between the two teams, which will be played at 4 p.m. Central time on Monday.
For the Dragon offense, freshman first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior center fielder
Mollie Annen was 2-for-3 with a double, while sophomore designated hitter
Kristy Bruni was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer. Villalobos was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Freshman outfielder
Carly Williamson, junior catcher
Brittany York and junior shortstop
Taylor Huss each had hits for MSUM.
Sophomore pitcher
Morgan Nybo was solid, firing a complete game. She allowed four runs (two earned), striking out three while walking four. Mercy stranded seven runners against Nybo.
MSUM (1-2) faced a 3-0 deficit in the game before mounting a comeback. It started in the fifth when Meeker led off with a single, and was pinch-ran for by freshman
Katelyn Ramberg. Bruni then stepped up and homered to left, scoring Ramberg and bringing MSUM within 3-2.
The Dragons then took the lead for the first time in the sixth. Annen led off with a double. York singled to center; on the play the throw to home was errant, allowing Annen to score and York to move to second, tying the game at 3-3. After a groundout moved York to third, sophomore
Kristen Nordby walked. Meeker singled, scoring York to put MSUM up 4-3. Nordby, who had moved to second on Meeker's hit, scored when Villalobos doubled to right, giving MSUM a 5-3 lead.
The RBI by Villalobos proved huge as Mercy scored a run in the top of the seventh. However, with the tying run at second, Nybo got a groundout to end the game and give MSUM the one-run win.
The Dragons will play two nonconference games tomorrow. The Dragons will face St. Michael's College at 2 p.m. Central time and face Slippery Rock at 6 p.m. later in the day.
