CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore pitcher Morgan Nybo fired a four-hit shutout to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team to a 4-0 win over St. Michael's College in nonconference action Sunday in Clermont, Fla. The Dragons (2-3) split on the day, as they lost to Slippery Rock in the nightcap, 5-4 thanks to a four-run rally by the Rock in the bottom of the seventh.

In the win over St. Michael's, Nybo fired the second complete-game shutout of her career and was sharp doing so, striking out 10 and walking only one.

Sophomore center fielder Mollie Annen was a key to the offense for MSUM, going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and two runs scored.

Junior catcher Brittany York was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while junior shortstop Taylor Huss and junior right fielder Rachel Sannicandro each had hits. Sannicandro and sophomore designated hitter Kristy Bruni scored runs.

Annen helped MSUM get on the board in the bottom of the first. She led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. One out later, York singled to center, scoring Annen and giving MSUM an early 1-0 lead.

MSUM pushed the lead to 2-0 in the second. Bruni led off by reaching on an error and moved to second on the play. A groundout moved Bruni to third, and she scored on a passed ball to give MSUM a two-run lead.

The game stayed 2-0 until the fifth. Sannicandro led off with a single, and stole second. Annen then stepped up with a two-run homer – her first of the year – to push the lead to 4-0.

The four runs were plenty for Nybo, who retired the final seven St. Michael's batters she faced.

In the loss to Slipper Rocky, Huss was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, while Meeker and freshman second baseman Jill Fox had doubles. Freshman left fielder Carly Williamson was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Sophomore Kristen Nordby took the loss for MSUM, going six-plus innings. She allowed 10 hits and five runs (three earned), striking out four while walking one.

The Dragons took the lead right away in the top of the first. With one out, Williamson singled, and moved to second on a groundout. Huss then hit a two-run homer to centerfield to put MSUM up 2-0.

Slippery Rock scored in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1.
MSUM pushed the lead to three runs in the fifth. Freshman first baseman Lauren Meeker doubled, and was pinch ran for by freshman Hannah Klug. One out later, junior right fielder Heather Tice walked. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Klug later scored on a balk, and Tice later scored when Williamson reached on an error as MSUM built a 4-1 lead.

That margin stood until the seventh, when Slippery Rock capitalized on a pair of Dragon errors to mount a four-run rally to earn the 5-4 win.

The Dragons will play two more games on Monday in Clermont, Fla. MSUM will face Ursuline College at noon Central time, and then will face New York Institute of Technology at 4 p.m. CT.  Prior to the game with NYIT, MSUM will complete the suspended game from Saturday in which the Dragons led 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
