SARTELL, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to St. Cloud State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Sunday at the Fitness Evolution Center in Sartell, Minn.
MSUM fell to 4-7 overall and 3-3 in the NSIC with the loss, while St. Cloud State improved to 8-9 overall and 5-0 in the league.
"I know I say it every time but it's true, I'm proud of my team and how they fought," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "There were a lot of close sets today and even after the match was decided my remaining players didn't give up. St. Cloud is a good team, one of the best in the conference. I hope we get a chance to play them again this year."
The Dragons were competitive in several matches. All three doubles matches were competitive as MSUM lost two by 8-6 counts (No. 1 and No. 3 doubles) and another by an 8-5 score.
MSUM lost two of the singles matches in three sets. At No. 1 singles, MSUM freshman
Jessamy Jones lost to Katie Kotschevar, 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 (super tiebreaker) while at No. 4 singles, Dragon freshman
Rebecca Lukes lost to Rachel Zwiener, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore
Morgan Smith also took her match to the wire before falling, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to SCSU's Marilia Roque Diversi. At No. 5 singles, sophomore
Ashley Wood also battled tough against SCSU's Jamie Voelker before falling, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
The Dragons will play two matches in Sioux Falls, S.D., this weekend, starting on Friday against Augustana College at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. They will conclude the weekend against Winona State at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in Sioux Falls.
