SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Despite winning two singles matches, the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team fell to Winona State, 6-3 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
MSUM fell to 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC with the loss while Winona State improved to 6-8 overall and 5-0 in the league.
The Dragons also won at No. 3 doubles on the night.
"This is such an improvement from last year when we failed to one even one match," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "It was a great team performance."
The Dragons won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Sophomore
Ashley Wood won a hard-fought 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 (super tiebreaker) win over Winona's Andrea Krueger at No. 5 singles, while Dragon sophomore
Cassie Smith earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Brittney Freund at No. 6 singles.
Freshman
Rebecca Lukes and Wood teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Winona's Katie Scruggs and Freund.
MSUM also lost a tough three-set match at No. 1 singles as Winona's Hannah Potter edged Dragon freshman Jessamy ones, 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 (super tiebreaker).
The Dragons return home to face a pair of NSIC foes this week, starting on Saturday against Sioux Falls (1 p.m.) and concluding Sunday morning against Southwest Minnesota State (9 a.m.). Both matches will be held at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
