WAYNE, Neb. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team dropped a pair of games to Wayne State on Sunday, losing 8-2 and 5-0 in Wayne, Neb.
MSUM fell to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the NSIC with the losses while Wayne State improved to 19-9 overall and 5-1 in the league.
The Dragons had 13 hits in the twinbill but managed only two runs in the two games, stranding six runners in each game.
"We have to find a way to string some hits together to score runs," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said. "We are getting runners on base but not putting the hits together. We will just keep working hard on our hitting and those scoring rallies will start to happen."
In the first game, sophomore second baseman
Kristen Nordby was 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Sophomore pitcher
Morgan Nybo was 1-for-1 with a run scored, while junior center fielder
Mollie Annen, freshman left fielder
Carly Williamson and junior right fielder
Heather Tice each had hits.
MSUM led 2-0 in the second after Nybo walked with one out and scored on Nordby's two-run homer. The Wildcats scored eight unanswered runs, however to secure the 8-2 win.
Nybo took the loss for MSUM, giving up eight earned runs and 13 hits in six innings. She struck out four and walked four.
In the second game, junior catcher
Brittany York was 2-for-2, while freshman first baseman
Lauren Meeker had a triple. Nordby, Annen and Nybo added hits for the Dragons.
Nordby took the loss for MSUM, giving up five runs (four earned) in six innings. She allowed seven hits, striking out three while walking four.
The Dragons had a pair of scoring opportunities. In the third, Annen singled with one out and one out later, York singled. However, a groundout ended the threat.
In the fourth, Meeker led off with a triple but the Dragons were unable to drive her in.
The Dragons will play at St. Cloud State on Tuesday. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud, Minn.
