GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Despite winning four of six singles matches, the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team came up just short against Bemidji State on Sunday, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Beavers in Grand Forks, N.D.

Despite the loss, MSUM (6-10, 5-6  Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) qualified for the NSIC tournament as a result of finishing in a tie for sixth place with Sioux Falls. As a result of their win over the Cougars, the Dragons will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament, which will be held on April 26-27 at Lifetime Fitness Oakdale in Minnetonka, Minn. 

Bemidji State improved to 8-8 overall and 4-7 in the NSIC with the win.

The Dragons played without starter Rebecca Lukes, who was out with an illness, and a few other players were battling illness as well.

Bemidji State won all three doubles matches, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by close 8-6 scores. The Beavers also won the No. 3 doubles by an 8-4 score.

MSUM fared better in singles with four wins in six matches. Freshman Jessamy Jones won at No. 1 singles for MSUM, beating Shaylin Prout, 6-0, 6-2.  Sophomore Morgan Smith also won in straight sets at No. 3 singles for the Dragons, beating Bemidji's Caley Westin, 6-4, 6-4. MSUM sophomore Cassie Smith won at No. 5 singles in impressive fashion with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Abby Vohaska.

Senior Kaitlin McNary won a tough three-set match at No. 6 singles, earning a 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 (third set super tiebreaker) win over Bemidji State's Anna Markgraf for MSUM's fourth singles win.

The Dragons will now prepare for the upcoming NSIC tournament. Pairings and times will be announced at a later date.
