MSUM Softball Wraps Up Regular Season With Four Doubleheaders This Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team wraps up the regular season this week with four doubleheaders, starting Monday with a nonconference twinbill at Jamestown which begins at noon.

MSUM then will return to conference play for a doubleheader at Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday and then make their long-awaited home debut on Saturday against Southwest Minnesota State beginning at 1 p.m. at the MSUM Softball Field. The Dragons will conclude the week against Sioux Falls on Sunday beginning at noon.

The Dragons have won a season-high four games in a row, recording sweeps of Minnesota Crookston (6-0 and 2-1) and Bemidji State (8-0 and 4-3) in Aberdeen, S.D., on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Junior center fielder Mollie Annen leads MSUM with a .330 average; she has four doubles, two homers and six RBI. Junior catcher Brittany York is hitting .315 with six doubles, a team-high 15 home runs and a team-high 18 RBI. Sophomore Morgan Nybo is hitting .294 while junior shortstop Taylor Huss is hitting .275 with six doubles and nine RBI. As a team, the Dragons are hitting .246 with 15 homers and 72 RBI.

On the mound, sophomore Kristen Nordby is 6-9 with a 3.13 ERA in 98.1 innings. She shares the team lead with 66 strikeouts. Nybo has a team-high seven wins (7-9 record) and has a 4.64 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 99.2 innings. She leads with four strikeouts.

Former Dragon standout Kelsey Fehl is in her fourth season as MSUM's head coach.

About Jamestown:
  The Jimmies are 18-16 and 7-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. They went 3-1 in a four-game series with Dakota State last weekend. Courtney Van den bussche leads Jamestown with a .417 average, while Emily Newman is hitting .384 with a team-high 26 RBI.  As a team Jamestown is hitting .264 with one homer and 133 RBI on the season. On the mound, Emily Snow is 7-9 with a 2.30 ERA while Hanna Dunnigan is 6-7 with a 3.51 ERA. Snow has 88 strikeouts in 100.1 innings.  Kevin Gall is in his 14th season as Jamestown's head coach.

About Minnesota Duluth: The Bulldogs are 21-17 overall and 7-6 in the NSIC.  They went 3-1 on the road last weekend, sweeping Minot State, 7-2 and 6-3 and splitting with Mary, winning the first game 4-2 before losing the second game 9-7. Megan Mullen leads UMD with a .349 average to go with eight homers and 22 RBI. Cayli Sadler is hitting .338 while Jordan Rice is hitting .336 with eight homers and 29 RBI. The Bulldogs are hitting .280 as a team with 30 homers and 164 RBI. On the mound, Cayli Sadler is 16-10 with a 2.45 ERA in 163 innings. She has struck out 133. Jen Banford is in her ninth season as UMD's head coach with a record of 294-186 at the school.

About SMSU: The Mustangs are 11-28-1 overall and 8-15-1 in the NSIC.  SMSU, which has lost six in a row, will face Concordia-St. Paul in a twinbill prior to facing MSUM. Kaley Scearcy is hitting .314 for SMSU while Chelsey Rodenkirch is hitting .301 with three homers and 15 RBI.  As a team, SMSU is hitting .240 with five homers and 99 RBI.  On the mound, Rachel Hoeppner is 7-12 with a 3.82 ERA in 146.2 innings. She leads with 81 strikeouts. Jamie Dunn is in her first season as the Mustang head coach.

About Sioux Falls: The Cougars are 28-11 overall and 16-7 in the NSIC. They will face Minnesota State and Northern State prior to facing MSUM. USF went 2-2 at home last weekend, losing two games to Winona State before sweeping Upper Iowa. Erin Scott leads Sioux Falls with a .377 average, while Bailey Bouman is hitting .371 with two homers and 24 RBI.  Betsy Thomas leads with nine homers and 29 RBI. As a team, the Cougars are hitting .299 with 27 homers and 192 RBI. On the mound, Amanda Walters is 17-6 with a 2.33 ERA in 147 innings. She has 186 strikeouts. Kelsey Thompson is in her first year as USF's head coach.

--York leads the NSIC with 18 runners thrown out stealing.
--Nordby leads in innings per game (6.56), is eighth in fewest walks allowed (25), 11th in earned runs allowed (44) and 14th in ERA at 3.13.
--Junior Heather Tice is tied for 11th with five sacrifice bunts.
--Nybo shares the NSIC lead with fewest triples allowed (zero).
--Freshman Lauren Meeker is 12th in defensive putouts with 222.
--Huss is 12th in the NSIC with 73 defensive assists.
 
Young Squad's Progress
The Dragons have no seniors on their active roster (senior Alexa D'Onofrio is out for the year with an injury). Having already nearly doubled their win total from 2013, the young Dragons have shown growth on the field in 2014. MSUM has now split with five teams that swept the Dragons in 2013: Northern State, St. Cloud State, Concordia-St. Paul, Mary and Upper Iowa.
