Box Score 2 DULUTH, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team saw its six-game winning streak end on Wednesday with 4-2 and 5-3 losses to Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action in Duluth, Minn.
MSUM fell to 15-20 overall and 9-15 in the NSIC with the losses while Minnesota Duluth improved to 23-17 overall and 9-6 in the league.
Earlier, in a nonconference doubleheader, UMD swept the Dragons by 10-0 and 4-0. The two games on Wednesday were much closer.
"We had our chances in both games," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said. "We were right there in both. We just couldn't find a way to string enough hits together to score runs when we had the chances."
The first game was tied at 2-2 heading into the seventh inning when UMD's Megan Mullen hit a two-out, two-run walk off home run to give the Bulldogs the win. For the Dragons freshman first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, the first of her collegiate career. Sophomore pitcher
Morgan Nybo was 1-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore
Kristy Bruni had a pinch-hit single.
Nybo took the loss on the mound for MSUM, going 6 2/3 innings. She gave up 10 hits and four earned runs, striking out two while walking none.
The Bulldogs led 2-0 after scoring twice off of three hits in the third inning. The Dragons got those runs right back in the top of the fourth. With two out, Nybo singled, and Meeker followed with a two-run homer to tie the game 2-2.
Nybo and UMD starter Cayli Sadler kept the game at 2-2 for the next few innings as the contest turned into a pitching duel. The Bulldogs put a runner on with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and while Nybo got the next out for the second out of the inning, but Mullen then delivered the walk-off two-run homer to give UMD the 4-2 win.
In the second game, junior center fielder
Mollie Annen was 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBI. Bruni was 1-for-3 with a run scored while freshman left fielder
Carly Williamson reached twice on walks and also had an RBI. Freshman
Hannah Klug, who served as a pinch runner, also scored a run for MSUM.
Sophomore
Kristen Nordby took the loss for MSUM, giving up five earned runs in six innings. She struck out five and walked none.
The Dragons got on the board first in the second inning. With one out, freshman third baseman
Kristina Villalobos walked, and Klug pinch-ran for her. Freshman second baseman
Jill Fox then walked, and Annen reached on a fielder's choice. Williamson walked on four pitchers to score Klug, giving MSUM a 1-0 lead.
That lead grew to 2-0 in the fourth. Bruni led off with a single, and Villalobos reached on a fielder's choice on a bunt attempt. One out later, both runners advanced on a passed ball. Bruni scored on Annen's fielder's choice, giving the Dragons a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth thanks to a pair of solo homers They added three more runs in the fifth -- off of four hits -- to take a 5-2 lead.
Annen led off the seventh with a solo homer -- her third of the season -- to bring MSUM within 5-3. However, Sadler, who came in relief in the fifth, got the final three outs to secure the two-run UMD win.
The Dragons are scheduled to be back in action on Friday at home against Southwest Minnesota State. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. at the MSUM Softball Field.
