MSUM Softball Drops 2 to Mavericks

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team dropped a doubleheader to Minnesota State, Mankato on Monday, falling by scores of 14-0 and 10-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action at Swisher Field in Aberdeen, S.D.

The Dragons are now 7-14 overall and 3-9 in the NSIC after the games while Mankato, which was the preseason favorite by the NSIC coaches, improved to 28-6 overall and 12-0 in the league. The Mavericks, who received a vote in the latest NFCA poll, have won 18 in a row.

In the first game, junior catcher Brittany York had a single for the Dragons' lone hit as MSUM was held in check by Mankato's Coley Ries, who struck out eight in four innings.

Sophomore pitcher Morgan Nybo took the loss for MSUM, giving up nine earned runs in five innings. She struck out one and walked one.

The Mavericks outhit the Dragons, 13-1, and MSUM committed four errors, which led to five unearned runs for the Mavericks.

In the second game, York was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer. Junior center fielder Mollie Annen was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while freshman second baseman Jill Fox and freshman left fielder Carly Williamson each had 1-for-2.

Sophomore pitcher Kristen Nordby took the loss for MSUM, giving up 10 runs (seven earned) in six innings. She struck out two and walked one.

MSUM took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Annen led off with a ground-rule double, and one out later, scored on York's two-run homer to left center, giving the Dragons the early lead.

The Mavericks scored 10 unanswered runs from there to secure the win.

MSUM's doubleheader with Jamestown, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed and may be rescheduled at a later date. The Dragons' next scheduled action is a doubleheader at the University of Mary on Wednesday. The twinbill is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D.
