MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball coach
Chad Walthall has announced the hiring of
Justin Wieck as an assistant coach on the Dragon staff.
Wieck has spent the past two seasons as the head men's basketball coach at the University of Jamestown in Jamestown, N.D. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. for two season and was the video coordinator at the University of Iowa for four years. Walthall was an assistant at Iowa from 2007-10.
"I've known Justin for many years and he is an outstanding basketball coach," Walthall said. "He possesses all the intangibles that go into being a very good professional in collegiate athletics."
A native of North Liberty, Iowa, Wieck guided Jamestown to a 17-12 overall mark in 2013-14 and to the inaugural North Star Athletic Association regular season and tournament titles. He was named the 2013-14 NSAA Coach of the Year. In two years at Jamestown, Wieck was 32-31 and mentored four players who earned a total of five all-conference honors.
During his time at Northern State, Wieck was part of a staff that led the Wolves to a 38-22 record. At Iowa, he was the video coordinator under Coaches Steve Alford and Todd Lickliter and was involved in breaking down game film and preparing scouting reports along with on-campus recruiting.
Wieck joined the Iowa program as a walk-on in 2004 after playing at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was part of two NCAA tournament teams at Iowa and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection. Wieck graduated from the University of Iowa in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in finance, and also earned his master's degree in sports administration from Iowa in 2008.
Wieck replaces Dan Weisse, who was hired as the head men's basketball coach at Minnesota Crookston in April
