MOORHEAD, Minn. – Junior
Kelsey Schatz scored the winning goal in the 74th minute to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Wayne State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Sunday in Moorhead, Minn.
Kelsey SchatzMSUM improved to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC with the win, while Wayne State fell to 1-6-1 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Schatz and freshman Makenzie Carlson had goals for the Dragons, while sophomores
Gabrielle Bjorge and
Ashley Germann each had an assist. Junior goalkeeper
Ashley Leintz limited the Wildcats to just one goal, stopping 17 shots.
The game was tied at 1-1 in the second half when the Dragons applied pressure in front of the Wayne State net. Schatz scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 73:51 mark to give MSUM a 2-1 lead, which the Dragons made stand over the final 16-plus minutes. Bjorge had the assist on the game-winning goal.
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Carlson took the ball down the left side and fired a shot past Wayne State goalkeeper Margaret Harma into the back of the net in the 23rd minute. Germann assisted on that goal.
The Wildcats had a an 18-7 lead in shots in the first half, including 11-4 in shots on goal, but Leintz kept them off the scoreboard with 11 saves as the Dragons took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Wayne State scored in the 66th minute to tie the game, but less than nine minutes later Schatz scored the game-winner.
The Dragons are on the road next weekend for a pair of NSIC games, starting on Saturday at nationally-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato.
