MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Four Minnesota State University Moorhead players scored in double figures as the Dragon women topped Minnesota Crookston, 68-63 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball Friday night in Moorhead, Minn.
MSUM improved to 9-8 overall and 8-5 in the NSIC with the win while Minnesota Crookston fell to 8-9 overall and 7-6 in the league. The win moves MSUM into sole possession of second place in the NSIC North Division.
Junior guard
Meghan Roehrich paced the Dragons with 17 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Sophomore guard
Morgan Banasik added 15 points and eight rebounds, while junior forward
Savanna Handevidt had her second career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Natalie Van Wyhe added 11 points and five assists for MSUM.
The Dragons shot 41.1 percent (24-of-58) for the game compared to 39.1 percent (25-of-64) for the Golden Eagles. MSUM had a 42-36 edge in rebounds in the game.
In a game which featured 11 tied and nine lead changes, the Dragons made plays late to seal the win.
Leading 58-57 with 3:55 left, MSUM scored five straight points -- three coming on a trey from Roehrich and two from Banasik -- to take a 63-57 lead with 1:24 left. The Golden Eagles climbed within three in the final half minute but got no closer as the Dragons went 5-of-6 from the line in the final 23 seconds to secure the win.
MSUM led 30-24 at halftime and opened the second half on a 7-2 run to stretch the lead into double digits at 37-26 with 17:54 left. A Van Wyhe three-pointer sparked that run for MSUM.
The Golden Eagles came back with an 19-7 run to take a 46-44 lead with 10:24 left, and from there, the biggest lead for either team was six points.
Freshman guard
Mallie Doucette had five points off the bench for MSUM.
MSUM wraps up the weekend on Saturday against Bemidji State. Game time is 4 p.m. at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of Game: The Dragons are now 15-1 at home versus the University of Minnesota Crookston since the Golden Eagles joined the NSIC in 1999. The Dragons only loss at home during this stretch was a 67-59 setback on Dec. 10, 2011.
