Divers Shine for Dragons in Loss at Minnesota State

Results
MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's swimming and diving won four events on the day but came up short against Minnesota State, Mankato, dropping the dual 168-132 on Saturday in Mankato, Minn.

"I'm really proud of the team today because they never gave up," MSUM head coach Todd Peters said. "We kept battling throughout the meet but we just couldn't overcome a really impressive Mankato performance today.  Nearly everyone swam faster than two weeks ago and the divers came through big time."

Divers competed two separate 1-meter events today; six optional dives followed by five voluntary dives.  The two scores were added together for an 11-dive score.  Three Dragon divers finished with NCAA national pre-qualifying meet qualifying scores (390 points): junior Emily Pascavis (first, 424.20), junior Jana Hedstrom (second, 405.90) and sophomore Amanda Groebner (third, 390.45).

Pascavis won the 1-meter diving (six dives) in 240.15. Hedstrom was second in 1-meter diving with Groebner third in 220.05.

Junior Jackie Woods won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.10.

Junior Lydia Weiler won the 200 breaststroke in 2:30.27 with Woods taking second in 2:30.95.

MSUM's 200 medley relay team was second in 1:50.28. That consisted of Erin Sullivan, Jackie Woods, Kaitlyn McKinney and Susie Kitzman.

Sullivan was second in the 100 backstroke in 59.73.

Kitzman had a strong showing in the 100 freestyle (54.97) as the Dragons finished 2-3-4 in that event.  Junior Annika Bordak (third, 56.16) and sophomore Amber Helgoe (fourth, 56.24) were the other top Dragon finishers in that event.  Kitzman was also second in the 200 butterfly in 2:18.60.

Helgoe was second in the 50 free in 25.39. Sophomore Kelly Engbring had a great 500 free and nearly came from behind to win the event, swimming one of her best times to take second (5:25.20.) Sophomore Danica Scheef swam a lifetime best in the 1000 freestyle (11:29.48).

The next scheduled meet for MSUM is on Feb. 7at the Minnesota Challenge in Minneapolis, Minn.
