No. 9 Dragon Men Clinch NSIC North in 89-67 Win over UMD

MOORHEAD, Minn.--The Minnesota State University Moorhead's men's basketball team clinched the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division for the second straight year with a 89-67 win over Minnesota Duluth on Friday night. Senior guard Jordan Riewer became the school's all-time leader in career three-pointers made with his third three-pointer of the game. Riewer now has 207 three-pointers in his career, two ahead of Jake Driscoll, who made 205 in 110 games between 2008-2012.

The Dragons improved to 26-2 and 17-2 in the NSIC with the win. With the loss, Minnesota Duluth dropped to 12-13 and 9-10 in the NSIC.

MSUM wrapped up the outright NSIC North Division title with the win and a loss by Northern State (92-81) at home to St. Cloud State.  The Dragons lead Northern State by four games with three regular-season games left.

The Dragons outshot the Bulldogs from the field in the game, 50 percent (32-of-64) to 47.1 percent (24-of-51). MSUM also outrebounded UMD 36-30 and forced 14 turnovers, compared to only committing five.

Six Dragons scored in double digits in the game, led by Riewer who scored 18. Senior guard Prescott Williams led the team in rebounds and steals with nine and three, respectively, while scoring 10 points. Junior guard Tyler Vaughan had four assists to lead the Dragons, contributing 10 points as well. Junior forward Isaac Sevlie had 14 points and two blocks. Other Dragons to score in double digits were sophomore forward Matt Nelson with 14 and junior guard Ngijol Songolo with 10.

MSUM jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 1:42 of the game -- which was started by back-to-back dunks from Isaac Sevlie --  and never looked back. The Dragons methodically added to the lead throughout the half and took a 47-27 lead into halftime.

Riewer had 13 first-half points for MSUM while Vaughan had eight.

The Bulldogs were within 51-30 but the Dragons put the game out of reach with a 14-5 run over the next five minutes to pull away to a commanding 63-35 lead with 15:21 left and MSUM was never threatened after that. Williams threw down an incredible dunk and finished off a three-point play to make the score 60-35.

MSUM hosts St. Cloud State at 6 p.m. on Saturday to conclude the weekend.
