SARTELL, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a pair of 8-1 wins over Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State on Saturday in Sartell, Minn. The 3-0 start is the Dragons' best under Head Coach Oliver Summers.

"I'm so proud of the team's performance today," Summers said. "We played against two tough teams who never stopped fighting. To win 8-1 against a St. Cloud State team that last year beat us 9-0 feels great. We have strength throughout the whole lineup and every player contributed to these victories."

Against Minnesota Duluth, the Dragons swept all three doubles matches and won five of six singles matches.

In doubles, MSUM junior Cassie Smith and freshman Sammie Smith rolled to an 8-0 win over Alyssa Brunelli and Kara Saemann. The Dragons also picked up the win at No. 2 doubles as senior Andrea Rognlien and junior Morgan Smith downed Drew DeCorsey and Shelby Benkofske, 8-3.  The doubles' success continued at No. 3 for the Dragons as junior Ashley Wood and sophomore Jessamy Jones earned an 8-5 win over UMD's tandem of Emma Bartels and Katie Baasch.

The Dragons claimed five wins in singles, with the lone loss coming at No. 4. Sammie Smith beat Brunelli, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Rognlien topped Saemann, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 slot. Jones cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over DeCorsey at No. 3 singles, while Wood beat Kaitlin Wohnoutka, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Cassie Smith outlasted Jillian Klasen, 7-6, 5-7, 10-2 at No. 6 singles for MSUM.

Against St. Cloud State, a team that beat MSUM 9-0 a year ago, the Dragons once again won all three doubles matches. Cassie Smith and Sammie Smith beat St. Cloud's tandem of Abigail Kantor and Alexie Portz, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.  Rognlien and sophomore Rebecca Lukes beat El O'Brien and Marilia Roque Diversi, 8-5 at No. 2 doubles while Jones and Wood beat Miranda Wynkoop and Lauren Makela, 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.

SCSU won at No. 1 singles in a three-set match, but the Dragons claimed the other five singles wins. Rognlien rolled past Kantor, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while Jones beat Roque Diversi, 6-3, 6-4. Morgan Smith claimed a hard-fought 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 win over SCSU's Jamie Voelker at No. 4 singles.

Wood moved to 3-0 on the year with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Portz at No. 5 singles, while Cassie Smith claimed a 7-6, 6-4 win over Matson at No. 6 singles to help the Dragons finish the 8-1 win.

MSUM's next action is on Feb. 21 against Augustana and Sioux Falls in Bismarck, N.D.
