Match ResultsBISMARCK, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team opened the regular season with an 8-1 win over Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in Bismarck, N.D.
Andrea RognlienMSUM improved to 1-0 overall and in the NSIC with the win while Mary, which finished second in the league a year ago, fell to 0-1 both overall and in conference play.
"It was a fantastic result, and a sign of things to come this season," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "I can't wait for our next match."
The Dragons won all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, junior
Cassie Smith and freshman
Sammie Smith teamed up for an 8-5 win over Mary's Meredith Holt and Eileen Leong.
MSUM rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles with senior
Andrea Rognlien and sophomore
Rebecca Lukes teaming up for that victory over Mary's Kate O'Connell and Anastasia Bruss. At No. 3 doubles, junior
Ashley Wood and sophomore
Jessamy Jones cruised to an 8-2 win over Catherine Gibson and Courtney Brackin.
The Dragons won five of six singles matches, including four in straight sets. At No. 1,
Sammie Smith rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Catherine Gibbens, while at No. 2, Rognlien beat Holt 6-3, 6-2.
Jones breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bruss at No. 3 singles while junior
Morgan Smith dominated Leong at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Wood had the toughest battle in singles at No. 5 before prevailing 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 over Brackin.
MSUM is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 with two matches in St. Cloud, Minn. against St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth.
