Box ScoreFARGO, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team improved to 8-2 in conference play with an 8-1 win over Winona State in a match Saturday at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
MSUM is now 8-7 overall and 8-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while Winona State fell to 6-9 overall and 5-5 in the league. The Dragons are assured of at least a top three finish in the NSIC; a win over Upper Iowa (8-1 NSIC) on Sunday would give them the second seed in the upcoming NSIC tournament.
"We enjoyed tremendous support today at home and it really showed in how our players played," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "They were fired up and playing at a really high level. We're getting into a good habit of beating these perennial conference powerhouses. Now we have to carry this momentum over to Sunday and do our best to beat Upper Iowa."
In doubles play, senior
Andrea Rognlien and junior
Morgan Smith lost a hard-fought 8-6 match over Winona's tandem of Brianna Havelka and Justine Daane at No. 1 doubles. Junior
Ashley Wood and sophomore
Jessamy Jones rolled to an 8-2 win over Katie Scruggs and Ellyn Grossen on No. 2 doubles for the Dragons.
In singles, Rognlien beat Havelka, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot, while Jones beat Daane, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.
Morgan Smith won at No. 3 singles, taking a 6-3, 6-0 win over Scruggs, while Wood beat Grossen at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-2. Junior
Cassie Smith also dominated her match for MSUM, winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles over Lauren Willkom.
The Dragons won by default at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
MSUM will face Upper Iowa at 9 a.m. Sunday in Courts Plus in Fargo.
