Box ScoreMOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team fell to Upper Iowa, 6-3, in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match on Sunday at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
Rebecca LukesMSUM fell to 8-8 overall and 8-3 in the NSIC with the loss, while Upper Iowa improved to 10-4 overall and 10-1 in the NSIC. The Dragons will be the No. 3 seed in the NSIC tournament later this month after finishing in third in the regular-season standings.
"It wasn't the perfect result but it was still a good match," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "Upper Iowa is a much-improved team just like us but we're definitely closing the gap.
Andrea Rognlien and
Jessamy Jones's matches could have gone either way and they battled hard to the last point.
Rebecca Lukes had an outstanding day, winning both of her matches. She is a player who always puts in a consistent performance. We're definitely pleased and excited to be the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament."
Upper Iowa won two of three doubles matches, with the Dragons winning at No. 3 doubles. Junior
Cassie Smith and sophomore
Rebecca Lukes teamed up for an 8-5 win over Anna Okolot and Kelly Jachymowski to give the Dragons a point at No. 3 doubles.
Upper Iowa won four of six singles matches. MSUM won at No. 4 singles as junior
Ashley Wood beat Okolot, 6-1, 6-0. Lukes beat Jachymowski 7-6, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to give MSUM another singles point.
The Dragons lost a pair of tough matches at the first two singles slots. Senior
Andrea Rognlien fell to Iris Verweij, 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 (super tiebreaker) at No. 1 singles, while sophomore
Jessamy Jones lost a 7-6, 7-6 match at No. 2 singles to Saki Kawabata.
MSUM wraps up the regular season with two nonconference matches this week. The Dragons will face Concordia College at 5 p.m. on Friday and then will face Gustavus Adolphus at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches will be at Courts Plus in Fargo.
