MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team fell to No. 1 ranked Minnesota Duluth in three-hard fought sets on Saturday, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
The Dragons are now 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Bulldogs are 11-2 and 4-1 in conference play.
The Dragons were led in the match by senior middle blocker
Kaitlin VanWinkle's eight kills and three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter
Carly Masloski added seven kills, and sophomore outside hitter
Claire Grimm added six more. Senior setter
Casie Baer had 24 assists and senior libero
Amber Krenske had 15 digs. Baer and redshirt freshman
Monica Vega had seven digs apiece. As a team, the Dragons hit .088 and had 40 digs.
The first set was a back and forth battle until the Bulldogs took the lead on a kill from Mariah Scharf, bringing the score to 7-6. UMD went on to score six of the next seven points before a kill by senior middle blocker
Abby Wolpern stopped the run at 15-9. Duluth led at match point, 24-15, but the Dragons continued fighting, scoring three points on a kill from Masloski and a block by junior middle blocker
Kelsey Hartkopf and Masloski, before the Bulldogs could put the set away. The Bulldogs took the set 25-18.
The Dragons came out with fire the second set, scoring the first five points including kills by Hartkopf and Grimm. Duluth battled back, tying the score at 14 on a Dragon error. The Bulldogs' lead never faltered from that point as they went on to win the set 25-19.
Set 3 was not clearly controlled by either team as there were 17 ties and seven lead changes. MSUM led the set 14-12 on a kill by Grimm. The final lead of the match was at 21-20 on a block by senior
Kaitlin VanWinkle and Wolpern. The Dragons were able to tie the set at 22-22 on a kill by Grimm, but the Bulldogs scored the final three points ending the set at 25-22.
The Dragons are on the road this week with conference matchups at Bemidji State on Friday and Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.
