ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia-St. Paul scored with two seconds left to stun the No. 3-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team, 98-97 in double in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Friday night in St. Paul.
MSUM fell to 21-3 overall and 13-2 in the NSIC with the loss, while Concordia improved to 7-14 overall and 4-11 in the league.
Senior guard
Tyler Vaughan led all Dragons with 23 points, nine rebounds and two assists while senior center
Isaac Sevlie had 20 points and six boards. Junior guard
Aaron Lien added 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and a block while sophomore guard
Tanner Kretchman had 16 points, eight assists and five boards.
Junior forward
Ayob Ayob put up 14 points and added two blocks and seven rebounds while senior guard
Ngijol Songolo had seven points and three assists.
MSUM shot 44.6 percent from the field on the game including 38 percent on the second half while the Golden Bears shot 42 percent on the game. CSP outrebounded the Dragons 44-43 and the CSP bench had 15 points while the Dragon bench had 14. The Dragons committed 14 turnovers compared to eight for the Golden Bears.
With just over four minutes to play in the second overtime, Ayob would hit a huge three giving the Dragons an 89-87 lead. MSUM would fall behind but a pair of free-throws from Sevlie would tie the game at 94 with 1:43 to play. A layup from Vaughan with 10 seconds to play would give MSUM a one-point lead at 97-96, but CSP would push the ball end to end and convert the layup with just two seconds to play, giving them a 98-97 lead. A desperation three from half court by the Dragons was off as CSP held on for the one-point win.
The Dragons hit three quick three-pointerss to start the game and took an early 9-6 lead over CSP. MSUM would gain its largest lead of the half on a three from Ayob bringing the score to 20-10 with just under 14 minutes to go. A monster block from Ayob resulting in a three from Vaughan with 1:39 remaining in the first half gave MSUM a 44-37 lead. The Dragons would extend that lead to 49-43 taking that into the locker room.
The Golden Bears went on a run to start the second half and brought the score within one at 54-53 with 15 minutes to play before a huge three from Kretchman would propel the Dragon lead back to four. Ayob grabbed an offensive board off a miss and ended with the hoop and the harm with 12:41 to go in the game, giving the Dragons a 63-56 lead. Vaughan would hit a three giving the Dragons a five point lead at 70-65 with just under seven minutes to go, but the Golden Bears would answer back with a three of their own making it a two point contest. CSP would take its first lead of the game with 4:09 to go at 72-71. The Dragons would trail by one with just over a minute to play before a huge charge call against MSUM would give Concordia the ball back and they would capitalize, taking an 81-77 lead.
Kretchman would hit a huge three from the top of the key with 42 seconds to go and MSUM would come up with a huge defensive play with just 12 seconds left in regulation. Songolo took the ball hard to the rim and would get the foul, making one of two free throws and tying the game at 81 with 4.2 seconds left as the game went to overtime as MSUM forced a stop on Concordia's final possession of regulation.
The Dragons held a three-point lead with just over a minute to go in the first overtime before the Golden Bears would tie the game at 86 sending the game into the second overtime.
MSUM plays at Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday. Game time is 6 p.m. in Mankato, Minn.
