Box Score MANKATO, Minn. – For the second game in a row, the No. 3 Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team went into overtime, this time outlasting Minnesota State, 94-89, in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Saturday night in Mankato, Minn.
The Dragons are now 22-3 on the season and 14-2 in the NSIC while Minnesota State is 15-7 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
Senior center Isaac Sevlie led all scorers with 33 points and nine rebounds while sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman had 18 points, five assists and two steals. Junior forward Ayob Ayob added 17 points and six rebounds and senior guard Ngijol Songolo had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
MSUM shot 44 percent from the field while Minnesota State shot 46 percent. The Dragons outrebounded the Mavericks 47-41 and grabbed 12 offensive boards. MSUM held the lead for 21:51 while the Mavericks led for 17:24 of the game.
MSUM took an early 4-0 lead on back-to-back buckets from Sevlie and Vaughan. Minnesota State would rally back going on a 16-4 run, taking a 16-8 lead with 14:06 to go in the first half. MSUM would then go on a 10-2 run of its own, bringing the game to 20-19 in favor of the Dragons on a free throw from Sevlie. The rest of the half would go back and forth with no clear leader, before a jumper in the lane from Sevlie would give the Dragons a 46-41 lead with just under 1:30 to play in the half. Minnesota State would get two more before the buzzer and the Dragons would take a three point lead into the locker room.
The second half would bring a run from Minnesota State, as they would tie the game at 52 with 16 minutes to play on a three-point play. The Dragons would fall behind at 59-54 before two free throws from Sevlie would bring MSUM within three. MSUM would take its next lead of the game on a three from Ayob, giving the Dragons a 64-63 lead with just over 8 minutes to play in the half. Kretchman would hit a monster three with 4:28 to play to propel the Dragons into the lead at 71-68, a lead from which they would never falter. A free throw from Kretchman would extend MSUM's lead to 77-75 with 10 seconds to play, but Minnesota State would answer back with two free-throws of its own to tie the game at 77 and bring the game to overtime.
Kretchman would hit another clutch three in overtime to give the Dragons an 85-83 lead with just two minutes to play. The Mavericks rallied back and take an 86-85 lead before Krechman would come in clutch for the Dragons once again hitting yet another three, giving MSUM an 88-86 lead with 20 seconds left to play. A layup from Songolo would seal the Dragon victory with four seconds to play at 90-86. MSUM would score two more points off free-throws and would escape with a 94-89 victory.
MSUM is back in action next Friday at home with a match against Wayne State at 8 p.m.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of Game: Tonight was the Dragons' fourth consecutive win over the Mavericks. The last time the Dragons accomplished this feat was when they won in the second of two games in the 1965-66 season, swept Mankato St. in the 1966-67 season and won the first matchup against the Mavericks in the 1967-68 campaign. It was also the first win for the Dragons in Mankato since their 75-74 victory on Feb. 14, 1981 snapping a nine game losing streak.
