Dragon Women's Soccer Heads South to Face Winona State and Upper Iowa

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team goes on the road this weekend for a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games. The Dragons will face Winona State at 1 p.m. on Saturday and conclude with a game at Upper Iowa at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Fayette, Iowa.

MSUM will meet Winona State for a 27th time with the Warriors leading the all-time series 20-6. Winona State has won 20 meetings in a row, including a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Dragons in 2015. MSUM will meet Upper Iowa for a 10th time and holds a slight 5-4 lead in the matchup. Upper Iowa won the last meeting, 6-0 in 2015.

"The team will be refocusing and getting back to work in preparation for this weekend," MSUM head coach Christie Chappell said. "It's important for this group to have a short memory and take each weekend a step at a time.  There are four games left which gives us plenty of moments to improve our performances and enjoy playing as a team."  

MSUM enters the week at 3-10 overall and 2-9 in the NSIC. The Dragons dropped a pair of home games on the weekend, losing to Minnesota State, 2-0 on Saturday and Concordia-St. Paul, 3-0 on Sunday.

Senior forward Jessica Johnson leads the Dragons with four goals and eight points this season while sophomore forward Annika Greaney has two goals and four points. Sophomore forward Jessica Dallman has a goal, an assist and three points on the year. Senior midfielder Megan Selanders, sophomore midfielder Ashley Coleman and freshman Rachel Jenson have each dished out assists this season. Johnson leads with 32 shots, including 17 on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Reagan VonBerge has started 12 games in net for MSUM and has 93 saves and leads the NSIC at 7.75 saves per game. VonBerge has a shutout and a 2.52 goals allowed average this season.

Christie Chappell is in her first season as MSUM's head coach.

About Winona State
Winona State enters the week at 6-7-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the NSIC.  The Warriors dropped two road games last weekend, losing 2-1 games at Mary and Minot State.
Abby Bohanski leads with 17 points — seven goals and three assists. Courtney Wiencek has 12 points (four goals, four assists) as does Meg Riebau (five goals, two assists). Through 14 games, the Warriors have tallied 21 goals.
Jordan Valkner is 4-3-1 in goal with a 0.99 goals allowed average for the Warriors. She has 44 saves and two shutouts on the season.
Ali Omar is in his 22nd season as the Winona State head coach with a record of 306-107-29 at the school.

About Upper Iowa
Upper Iowa, which hosts Northern State is 7-6 overall and 6-5 in the NSIC. The Peacocks lost a pair of road games last weekend, losing to Mary, 2-1 and league-leading Minot State, 3-0. Prior to the weekend, Upper Iowa had won five games in a row.
The Peacocks have had eight different players score a goal this season, led by Birgit Reindeers with three goals and three assists and a team-high nine points. Maggie Olson also had three goals. Brianne Fenton, Jordyn Ostrowski and Christiana Atteberry each have scored twice.
Calla Petrie is the primary goalkeeper for Upper Iowa, having started every game. She has 71 saves, a 1.31 goals allowed average and three shutouts on the year.
James Price is in his first season as Upper Iowa's head coach with a record of 7-6.

VonBerge Leads the Way

Junior Reagan VonBerge had a career-high 14 saves in the 3-1 loss at Minnesota Duluth on Sept. 22. She leads the NSIC at 7.75 saves per game and is second in overall saves (10 starts) with 93.

Rivalry Rock Returns
With the 1-0 win over Minnesota Crookston, MSUM regained the Highway 75 Rivalry Rock that goes to the winner of the game between the two teams. MSUM has now won the rock twice in four years.

Johnson Hits the Net Again
Senior forward Jessica Johnson continues to hold the team lead in goals and points this season. She scored the winning goal in the 1-0 win at Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 7. She has four goals and eight points for the season and has eight career goals at MSUM.
