Defense Helps Dragon Women Get Past Minot State, 57-46

MOORHEAD, Minn. — A solid defensive effort helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team earn a 57-46 win over Minot State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM is now 6-1 overall and 3-0 and tied for first in the NSIC, while Minot State fell to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the league. The Dragons have won six in a row.

How it happened…
MSUM held Minot State to just 29.8 percent (17-of-57) shooting in the game, including just 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from three-point range. MSUM also forced 14 turnovers and had an 18-11 edge in points off of turnovers.

The game was tied at 18-18 after one quarter. MSUM trailed 25-22 in the second but ended the first half on a 12-2 run over the final 7:48 to take a 34-27 lead into the break.  Freshman forward Morgan Ham had six points during that run while junior forward Drew Sannes had four.

The Dragons struggled from the floor in the third quarter, hitting just 3-of-13 field goals, but held onto the lead thanks to a late layup by junior guard Cassidy Thorson.

MSUM held a 48-44 lead with 5:01 left but outscored the Beavers 9-2 the rest of the way to wrap up their third straight home win.

Impact performances…
Sannes finished with 16 points, six rebounds and four blocks despite battling foul trouble and playing only 23 minutes. She had entered the game with five straight double-doubles.

Sophomore guard Jacky Volkert had 14 points and a career-high nine assists while freshman forward Morgan Ham had a career-high 13 points, all coming in the first half.

Four Dragons had four rebounds each: junior forward Cassidy Thorson, Volkert, senior guard Jessica Hart and freshman forward Megan Hintz. Volkert also led with two steals.

Thorson had five points while Hintz had four.

MSUM hits the road next weekend to face Minnesota Crookston on Friday and Bemidji State on Saturday.

Tonight was the fifth straight win over Minot St. The only two squads that the Dragons have longer winning against are the University of Minnesota Duluth (6 consecutive wins) and Upper Iowa University (19 consecutive wins).
