Match ResultsBISMARCK, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team improved to 4-0 on the season with an 8-1 win over Minnesota Duluth on Sunday in Bismarck, N.D.
The Dragons are now 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while UMD is 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the league.
MSUM swept all three doubles matches to open the match and then won five of the six singles matches on its way to the convincing win.
"We got off to a great start in doubles and never looked back," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "Again our singles lineup was very strong and we'll probably work on some pressure situations to take us to the next level. I'm proud of the team's performances this weekend."
In doubles, sophomore
Jade Goodyear-Anderson and junior
Maria Moral Carretero picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 singles for MSUM, while junior
Jessamy Jones and senior
Ashley Wood picked up an 8-2 win over the UMD tandem of Jillian Klasen and Kelsey Zetah at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, senior
Morgan Smith and sophomore
Ricquel Ramsbottom picked up an 8-4 victory over UMD's Katie Baasch and Karly Weber.
The Dragons won four singles matches in straight sets. Jones beat Drew DeCorsey, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Smith beat Klasen, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Wood rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rachel Menke at No. 5 singles for MSUM while Ramsbottom dominated Mikayla Gottwalt, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The tightest singles match came at No. 2, where Goodyear-Anderson battled Shelby Benkofske of UMD. Goodyear-Anderson won the hard-fought match by a 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 (super tiebreaker) score.
MSUM will return to action on Feb. 20 at Augustana. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Dragons will face the University of Sioux Falls on Feb. 21.
