Box ScoreSIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to the University of Sioux Falls in action Sunday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Dragons fell to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the loss, while USF improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.
The Cougars won two of three doubles matches, and the two teams split the six singles contests. However, all three of USF's singles wins came in three-set matches.
"They were tough again this year. Losing in so many super tiebreakers is never easy but what is really came down to was our doubles performance," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "Needless to say we will be focusing on that at practice this week and I hope we get another shot at USF later this year."
Sioux Falls won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Dragons won at No. 3, where sophomore
Ricquel Ramsbottom and senior
Morgan Smith teamed up for an 8-3 win over USF's Stacey Beard and Abby Seigenthaler.
In singles, junior
Jessamy Jones was impressive, beating USF's Joey Wenborg, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot. Junior
Maria Moral Carretero also won in straight sets for the Dragons, taking a 6-1, 6-4 win over Emily Erickson at No. 3 singles.
Senior
Ashley Wood won a hard-fought match at No. 5 singles for MSUM, prevailing 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 10-5 over Kara Bunkers.
MSUM lost at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. All three matches went to a third-set super tiebreaker and the Cougars won all three by identical 10-5 scores.
The Dragons are back at home next weekend for a pair of matches. The Dragons will host Minnesota State at 3 p.m. on Feb. 27 and follow with a match against Southwest Minnesota State at 9 a.m. on Feb. 28. Both matches will be at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
