MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon tennis team looks to bounce back this weekend with a pair of home Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches. The Dragons will face off against the Minnesota State Mavericks at 3 p.m. Saturday and the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs Sunday at 9 a.m. at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
The Dragons dropped a pair of matches this weekend, one to NSIC-leading Augustana (9-0) and one hard-fought match to Sioux Falls (5-4) after starting the season 4-0. The Dragons have defeated both the Mavericks and the Mustangs in each of the last two years and look to add to their win-streaks against the two teams this weekend. Most importantly, the Dragons hope to regain some momentum for the rest of the season.
MSUM's junior
Jessamy Jones went 1-1 on the weekend and is currently leading the Dragons' singles with a 5-1 record. Junior
Maria Moral Carretero and senior
Ashley Wood also went 1-1 on the weekend and have compiled a 4-2 record along with the rest of the Dragon singles players
The doubles tandem of sophomore
Jade Goodyear-Anderson and senior
Morgan Smith were the only Dragons to pull off a win in doubles this weekend, bringing their overall record to 4-2, the best on the team along with the Jones and Wood tandem. Carretero and sophomore Riquel Ramsbottom are 3-3 in doubles.
Oliver Summers is in his fourth year as MSUM's head coach.
About Minnesota State: The Mavericks come into the weekend with a 3-2 record (3-2 NSIC) after a weekend split that included a loss to Upper Iowa (2-7) and a victory over Winona State (9-0) in NSIC play. The Mavericks are led by sophomore Killian Doran in singles with a 4-1 record and the tandem of junior Melissa Mashburn and freshman Erin Streeter in doubles. Of Minnesota State's victories this season, one is over Sioux Falls (5-4) who the Dragons lost to last weekend. Christie Williams is in her fourth season as head coach.
About Southwest Minnesota State: The Mustangs are now 0-6 (0-5 NSIC) after a pair of NSIC losses to Winona State (3-6) and Upper Iowa (0-9) last weekend. The Mustangs are led in singles by sophomore Ashley Hoehne with a 2-4 record and freshman Britney Thompson with a 2-3 record. Hoehne and Thompson also form the team's best doubles tandem with a 2-3 record. Senior Crystal Overbaugh and sophomore Gabby Tellijohn also have a win together for the Mustangs in doubles. Adam Henning is in his second season as head coach.
