Box ScoreFARGO, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep at home with a 9-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State in action Sunday at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
MSUM improved to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the win, while SMSU fell to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in the league. The Dragons went 2-0 on the weekend, also beating Minnesota State, 6-3 on Saturday.
"This was a great way to wrap up the weekend with a calm, confident victory," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "Our goal was to be as efficient as possible on court and for the most part we achieved that."
Doubles play proved to be strong for MSUM as the Dragons recorded three convincing wins. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore
Jade Goodyear-Anderson and junior
Maria Moral Carretero rolled to an 8-3 win over SMSU's Gabby Telljohn and Crystal Overbaugh. Senior
Ashley Wood and junior
Jessamy Jones alsowere in firm control at No. 2 doubles for MSUM, taking an 8-3 decision over Britney Thompson and Ashley Hoehne. Senior
Morgan Smith and sophomore
Ricquel Ramsbottom dominated Jenna Gannott and Madyson Brinkman at No. 3 doubles, 8-0 to complete the sweep.
The Dragons won all six singles matches in straight sets and lost just 10 games collectively in the six matches. Moral Carretero beat Hoehne, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while Ramsbottom beat Brinkman, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
Jones improved to 7-1 on the season in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Crystal Overbaugh at the No. 1 slot. Goodyear-Anderson beat Telljohn, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles while Smith beat Gannott, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Wood survived a tough second set against Thompson to earn a 6-1, 6-4 win.
MSUM is off until March 13 when it faces North Georgia in Orlando, Fla., as part of its spring break trip.
