Nybo Pitches Dragon Softball Past Philadelphia, MSUM Splits on the Day

CLERMONT, Fla. — Senior pitcher Morgan Nybo fired a three-hit shutout to help the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team record a 7-0 win over Philadelphia in nonconference action Wednesday in Clermont, Fla. The win helped MSUM earned a split on the day as the Dragons fell to No. 20 Southern New Hampshire, 3-0.

The Dragons are now 5-9 on the season with two games remaining on the Florida trip.

In the win over Philadelphia, Nybo was stellar on the mound, firing a three-hit shutout. She struck out four and walked two as she recorded her eighth career shutout.

Senior left fielder Kristy Bruni was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, while freshman shortstop Taylor Roddie was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Senior second baseman Kristen Nordby had a double and a run scored, while junior center fielder Carly Williamson and sophomore first baseman Becca Ostby had hits. Williamson, junior first baseman Lauren Meeker, junior right fielder Hannah Klug and freshman catcher Savanah Tweet had RBI.

MSUM did not commit an error against Philadelphia and just had one error on the day.

"It was good to see us string some hits together and score some runs against Philadelphia," MSUM head coach Kelsey Fehl said. "In both games our pitchers were solid and we played great defense behind them."

Freshman Aunica Novacek had a stolen base and a run scored, while freshman third baseman Morgan Anderson and sophomore catcher Megan Asham each scored runs.

The Dragons scored in the bottom of the first. Roddie singled with one out, and Nordby reached on an error to move her to second. Bruni delivered with a two-run triple to center to score both runners. After junior third baseman Kristina Villalobos walked, Meeker hit a groundout to second to score Bruni, giving MSUM a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Meeker led off with a walk, and was pinch-ran for by Novacek. Novacek stole second and moved to third on a groundout. She scored on Tweet's ground ball, making the score 4-0.

In the sixth, MSUM put the game away. With one out, Ostby, who was pinch hitting for Anderson singled, and moved to second when Asham walked. Anderson came back in to run, and both runners moved ahead a base on a passed ball. Klug hit an RBI groundout to score Anderson, and Williamson followed with an RBI single to score Asham, making the score 6-0.

Rode followed with a triple to score Williamson, giving the Dragons a commanding 7-0 lead.

Tweet also threw out a runner trying to steal in the first inning. That was plenty for Nybo, who allowed just one Philadelphia runner to reach third base.

Earlier in the day, the Dragons battled tough against No. 20 Southern New Hampshire before falling, 3-0. The game was 1-0 through five innings before SNH scored two insurance runs in the sixth to push the lead to 3-0.

Nordby had the lone hit for the Dragons against Southern New Hampshire pitcher Sarah Lavellee, who struck out six.

Nordby took the loss for MSUM, going six innings and allowed three earned runs. She struck out one and walked one.

MSUM wraps up the Florida trip on Thursday with two more nonconference games. The Dragons will play Franklin Pierce at 8 a.m. Central time and St. Michael's at 12 p.m. CT.
