MOORHEAD, Minn. — Thanks to an offensive attack that produced 14 runs and 19 hits in the doubleheader, the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team recorded a sweep of Minot State on Tuesday, topping the Beavers 7-1 and 7-3.
MSUM is now 12-22 overall and 5-13 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while Minot State is 12-23 and 1-16 in the NSIC.
"It was great to see two complete games today," MSUM head coach Kelsey Fehl said. "We came out and hit the ball hard in both games, and had good pitching and good defense. We competed well from the first pitch to the last out."
In the opener, senior pitcher
Morgan Nybo was in control, firing a three-hitter. She allowed one earned run in seven innings, striking out six while walking just two. The Dragons also were stellar in the field, not committing an error.
Junior center fielder
Carly Williamson was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for MSUM. Junior first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while senior second baseman
Kristen Nordby was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore designated hitter
Sydney Beck had a double and run scored, while freshman shortstop
Taylor Roddie, senior left fielder
Kristy Bruni, sophomore
Megan Asham and freshman catcher
Savanah Tweet each had hits. Junior third baseman
Kristina Villalobos had an RBI. MSUM finished with nine hits in the game.
Minot State scored a run in the top of the first to make it 1-0. The Dragons responded in the bottom of the first. Williamson led off with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Roddie. Nordby doubled to left-center to score Williamson to make it 1-1. Nordby later moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error off the bat of Villalobos, who reached base safely on the play. It proved to be crucial, as Beck followed with a two-out double, and both runners scored on a two-run single by Meeker to make it 4-1.
The game stayed that way until the fifth. Tweet led off with a single, and freshman
KyLee Bartholomay pinch-ran for her. Bartholomay stole second, and scored on a triple by Williamson, making it 5-1. Williamson would scored on a passed ball. Roddie singled, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Villalobos to make it 7-1.
That was more than enough run support for Nybo, who did not allow a run after the first inning.
In the second game, Roddie was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Bruni was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman right fielder
Aunica Novacek was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, while Nybo was 1-for-1 with an RBI double. Junior second baseman
Jill Fox was 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored. Williamson also had a hit and a run scored.
Nordby got the win, going 5 1/3 innings. She struck out four and walked four, allowing three earned runs. Nybo came in with two runners on and two out in the sixth and kept Minot off the scoreboard to pick up the save.
Minot led 1-0 after the first inning. The Dragons came back in the bottom of the inning as Roddie led off with an infield single and stole second. She scored on Nordby's RBI single, tying the game at 1-1.
Minot State scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 3-1 lead. MSUM tie the game in the bottom of the third. Williamson reached on an infield single and stole second. Roddie singled to score Williamson, and also advanced to second on a fielding error in left. A groundout moved Roddie to third, and Bruni singled up the middle to score her, tying the game at 3-3.
MSUM broke the tie in the fourth. With one out, Fox singled to shortstop. Novacek delivered with the first collegiate home run of her career, a two-run shot to left, to break the tie and giving MSUM a 5-3 lead.
The Dragons added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Fox walked to lead off the inning and stole second. After a strikeout, Fox moved to third on a groundout. Roddie delivered the big two-out hit this time, a single up the middle, to make it 6-3. Nybo also picked up a huge two-out hit, a double off the fence in left, to make it 7-3.
Nybo came in relief of Nordby with two runners on in the sixth, and got out of the inning without any runs scored. Minot State put two runners on in the seventh but a groundout to Roddie at short ended the game, giving MSUM their first NSIC sweep of the 2016 season.
The Dragons are back in action on Thursday when they host Northern State. The twinbill starts at 2 p.m. at the MSUM Softball Field.
