SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Augustana College on Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Vikings prevailed by scores of 17-0 and 9-3.
In the opener, MSUM was held to three hits – a double by junior center fielder
Carly Williamson and singles from sophomore pinch hitter
Becca Ostby and sophomore
Megan Asham.
Senior pitcher
Morgan Nybo took the loss for MSUM, giving up six earned runs in one inning. She struck out two and walked two. Redshirt freshman pitcher
Gabby Williams gave up 11 runs (10 earned) in three innings, striking out one while walking two.
Augustana, which hit four homers in Game 1, scored six runs in the first and nine in the second to build the lead.
In the second game, the Dragon offense warmed up, producing 11 hits, MSUM's second-highest total of the season. Senior left fielder
Kristy Bruni was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while senior pitcher
Kristen Nordby was 2-for-3. Williamson and freshman shortstop
Taylor Roddie were each 2-for-4, while junior first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 1-for-4 with a double and RBI. Sophomore designated hitter
Sydney Beckhad a hit for MSUM, who matched the Vikings with 11 hits.
Nordby took the loss for MSUM, giving up nine runs (eight earned) in six innings. She struck out three and walked two.
The Dragons struck first. With one in the first, Roddie singled, and moved to second on a passed ball. Nordby walked. Bruni singled through the right side to score Roddie, giving MSUM a 1-0 lead.
The advantage grew to 2-0 in the third. Bruni singled with one out, and scored on Meeker's RBI double.
Augustana capitalized on a pair of Dragon errors in the third to take a 3-2 lead, and the Vikings added three more runs in the fourth on a three-run homer by Sarah Kennedy.
MSUM climbed within 6-3 in the fifth. Roddie and Nordby led off with back-to-back singles, and Bruni followed with a single to score Roddie with MSUM's third run.
The Vikings added a run in the fifth on a solo homer and two more in the sixth on a two-run homer to make the final score 9-3.
The Dragons are back in action Sunday at Wayne State (Neb.). The doubleheader begins at noon in Wayne, Neb.
